Quote from fenn68 on December 30, 2019, 3:52 pm1. Tatis .... want his speed and base running disrupting the other team at the top of the order.
2. Pham .... professional hitter who gets on base and should be able to work with Tatis on the base paths
3. Hosmer (L) ... v RHP ... does hit in the clutch (but without power) so should deliver RBI behind Tatis / Pham and ahead of Machado
4. Machado ... power sitting behind a lot of on-base players
5. Mejia (#) ... just a better hitter than the other options
6. Myers ...
7. Grisham (L) ...
8. Profar (#) ...
======
Hedges
Garcia (L) ... would use him in situations over Profar but he has never been a regular or really played over a 1/2 season
France .... a RHH complement for PH / 1B / 3B when needed
Margot ... RHH platoon with Grisham and a defensive sub for Pham / Myers if needed
PTNL for the 26th man ... probably should be a LHH for PH at a minimum and not be a one dimensional defensive option (to bad Naylor). If he stay healthy Cordero should have the advantage unless the Padres want to keep his bat sharp in AAA playing every day in case he needs to replace Grisham.

1. Tatis- most AB, top of lineup speed
2. Pham-classic #2 hitter
3. Machado-classic #3 hitter
4. Hosmer-somebody has to hit #4
5. Mejia
6. Myers-no pressure but still somewhat important
7. Grisham
8. Profar
Bench
1. Hedges
2. Garcia-any if position
3. Margot-any OF position RH
4. Cordero-any OF position LH
5. Cronenworth-any if position outside of 1B, emergency pitcher, they will want to see how good his bat is and if he can become long-term 2B
Rotation
1. Richards-he was picked up to be the ace
2. Paddack-they won’t force him into ace role yet
3. Davies-soft tosser between 2 power arms
4. Lamet
5. Lucchesie-their only LH and most reliable starter, he will start over Quantrill
Bullpen
1. Yates
2. Pom-$34 million makes him the #2
3. Munoz
4. Castillo-he was very reliable and supposed to be their top setup man last year, he won’t be at the bottom of the pen
5. Strahm
6. Johnson-hasn’t earned anything yet
7. Guerra-they don’t want to lose him but he starts at the bottom
8. Quantrill-long relief and first starter up in case of injury

Quote from sportwarrior on December 30, 2019, 5:34 pmI like Lucchesi, but I really don't think he's a part of a championship rotation. He's way way too inefficient with his pitches and I don't feel like he's going to get better. I would love for him to prove me wrong, but if he does this year what he has the past few he's going to tax our bullpen with 4-5 ip every 5th day. That won't fly.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 30, 2019, 7:19 pmAccording to my calculations Lucchesi averaged 5.8 ip per start.
Not bad for potentially our #5 SP.
I’m thinking that number should get better with a better offense to keep him in the game.
Our poor offense definitely has contributed to our starters getting run early.

I also thought there were some starts where Green pulled Joey too early. I know Joey’s numbers the 3rd time through the lineup weren’t very good, but I can think of at least 3 starts off the top of my head where Green gave him the hook too early. A couple of those the BP ended up blowing. I thought Hunter, Myers, Margot, Mejia and Joey were the players most negatively impacted by Green’s managing last year.

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 7, 2020, 3:16 pmSo after the signing of Stammen.....how many think we’re done?
How many think there may be a few smaller moves that affect the 26 man?
How many(Henry?) still think we have at least one “big” move coming?
I believe our payroll is maxed out....so unless we can get creative involving a deal that involves Myers I believe our 26 man is already part of the current 40.

Well Acee just tweeted about his Cat getting all crazy-- which he says -- happens when the Padres make a Move or when he sees the neighbors dog... so take it as you may
Also my Buddy who works for the Padres has told me AJP/Padres want to make a "headline" move before Fanfest-- which is this SATURDAY.. soooo?????

Hard for me to see any "smaller moves" that would improve the current 26 man options.
Long shot on a "big move" ... but given the payroll committed, the very low of dealing Myers' contract at a level that would significantly save payroll, and the limited number of "big move" upgrades that carry a small contract for 2020 ... not likely but still a shot. Can think of 3 players that could be available carrying a reasonable 2020 contract and might work for the Padres (Preller can always squeeze another $5MM out of ownership for the "right" guy).
- Contreras ... C .... Cubs ... 3 years control and $4.5MM in 2020 (partially offset by moving Hedges). Cubs seem to be determined to drop under the luxury tax limit in 2020 even if it means doing nothing to help them win in 2020. Might have to wait until the Bryant situation is resolved (next week). Padres need offense ... Contreras would provide that upgrade over Hedges.
- Merrifield ... 2B ... KC ... 4 years control and $5MM in 2020. Every indication is that KC's owner does not want him dealt but I expect for the "right deal" .. possible.
- Haniger ... RF ... Sea ... 3 years control and $3MM in 2020. No real clear spot for Haniger with Myers around unless one does some CF time / 1B time ... or someone is moved in the deal.
All three have elements I expect Preller seeks ... > 2 years control AND a low 2020 salary. The other names being tossed around have limited control and big 2020 salaries ... so a bit harder to work in.
Of course, Preller is creative with multi-team deals so there may be some under the radar player who is an upgrade that we just never considered available.
Back of the mind is some form of a CLEV-CINN-SD deal that lands SD Senzel for a long haul 2B.
All long shots I guess ... maybe Contreras has the best odds since the Cubs have some motivation (and a replacement in house) .. but they are asking high.
