GO PADRES!

Kyle Hart was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday. His turn in the rotation was game 2 against the Giants. I wonder who will replace him.

With another day off next Thursday I think they would go with King, and Cease can go the following Friday on 5 days rest.

With yesterday off ... then off days next Monday and Thursday ... optioning the 5th SP makes sense. Guessing they call up a RP for the period until then need another SP ... and that may be Darvish.

Reynolds had a rehab in EP ... so maybe he would be the RP activation.

The choice of Vasquez v Hart as the SP optioned ... wonder what were the factors that separated them. I guess with both having control / command issues ... maybe Vasquez' better "stuff" wins out.

Side note: As I understand, a team can run a 25 man roster (as opposed to the 26 man) ... not sure on any time limits or other conditions ... but possible the Padres could go that way. Not really a need for another pitcher given how the pen is being used combined with the off days.

On the other hand, the max on pitchers is 13 but no rule they can't go with 12 and go back to 26 man roster by adding a position player. Merrill off the IL? Campusano as the RHH DH / C.

Some interesting options.

Cassavell is reporting that it is Bergert being called up .... likely for long relief and they will go with a four man rotation for awhile.

Given how little they used Gillaspie (2 appearances) this month, not sure we will see much of either ... not sure that helps in Bergert's development unless working with Niebla is considered.

I think that is exactly why Bergert is being brought up.  He pitched well to begin the season in EP but then seemed to slip into his old form and started to get hard again like 2024.  He has shown more than Kolek overall, so I'm not surprised it's Bergert vice Kolek.   If successful, this might be the end of Gillaspie on the 40 man but it could also mean that the Padres are in transition both on the mound and for position players.  Looming in the wings is Reynolds and if he shows decent control and velocity in the minors he could be a big add to the pen; like him way better than Marinaccio.

If Heyward can play on his creaky knee and Arraez has successfully passed his concussion protocol both could be up this weekend.  That would likely send Joe and McCoy back down, although Ornelas could be in that mix vice either.  As I indicated earlier, this also could be the last homestand for Gurriel, since it is only a matter of time before he is released.  I'm looking to getting our other core players back in mid-May, so there is still a chance Campy could come up before then.  So this is a team in transition, getting stronger and better in the next couple of weeks.

Maybe just trying to read between the lines in injury reports but got the sense Heyward may be out longer that we think.

Guessing we see Arraez back first ... McCoy optioned, then

Merrill with Joe being optioned. If Lockridge comes off think he will be optioned with Wade kept, then

Cronenworth (?) with that being the point they make the call on Gurriel and a DFA.

Lastly, IF either Gonzalez or Ornelas (L) just cannot produce over a reasonable period (they would be platoon in LF) then we might see Perlaza (#) added to fill Gurriel's spot on the 40 man. In EP he is hitting well both LHP and RHP and the "standard" he has to beat may be very low.

Of course Heyward's return (if he returns) will impact the Ornelas, Gonzalez, and Perlaza mix.

3-4 weeks from now Padres should have a significantly altered line-up.
