St. Louis Cardinals at San Diego Padres: August 1-3
Quote from BoosterSD on August 2, 2025, 7:48 pmThis lineup feels so much deeper/longer. Its nice to not feel like the 6,7,8,9 hitters are almost automatic outs.
This could be a very fun Aug/Sept for us Friar fans!!!

Quote from brent wolff on August 3, 2025, 4:58 amI hope that is the last we see of Vasquez in the starting rotation for the remainder of the season. It is clear Schildt and Nieabla don't trust RV to face a lineup a 3rd time. Looking forward to King returning and Sears being inserted into the starting rotation. It will be interesting to see what they do with Cortes. Go Pads!

Did hear some speculation that Cortes is on the way and will start soon .. he is a starter. Sears is scheduled to make a start and has been nothing but a starter in recent years. King rehabbing today and clearly is a starter. Plus in the nexts few weeks the Padres get off days on the Thursdays.
Even if they go to 6 man rotation (has been suggested to help Darvish / King / Cortes ease back into playing after the long layoffs and keep Pivetta / Cease fresher for down the stretch / playoffs) but they have 8 SP what to do with the other 2?
Sears and Vasquez COULD be optioned ... that would be tough on either one who are pretty established MLers. Both could go the pen but two from the pen then would have to go. Morgan has options (but has been really good). The second to the minors is tricky given the number who have no options or are just too good to take off the roster.
An IL stint for someone? (Matsui as looked bad over the past few weeks ... tired arm or right oblique? He can't be optioned).
Sept 1 the rosters expand by 2 ... so the 2 that are removed now could be back for Sept.
So how effective would be 6 SP (King - Pivetta - Darvish - Cease - Cortes (L) - Sears (L)) - 1 long / piggy back RP (Vasquez) - 6 late game RP (Suarez - Miller - Adam - Estrada - Morejon (L) - Peralta (L))? The 2 new LHP as SP might give teams a different set of problems with a different look than all RHSP.
Before getting too upbeat ... we need to see if Cortes and Sears actually are effective now ... down the stretch the past and the long run potential is not relevant. Get the sense the may become and in/out mix/match period until mid-Sept when they start setting up for a playoff rotation.

Quote from fenn68 on August 3, 2025, 6:27 amI know Vasquez is frustrating and clearly Shildt do not want him to go 3X though the line-up.
However, prior to yesterday, I believe in his last 6 starts (all short) he had a sub 3 ERA and the pen carried the team to the end ... artistic no but effective for the team yes. Padres were winning more games when he started than the others (yes, thanks to the pen). Sort of the extended version of the TB use of RP to start games in effect.
If this is a team result game ... the Vasquez + pen has been yielding the desired result ... wins. Maybe not sustainable ... maybe sustainable. Not as clear cut to drop Vasquez out of starting ... we still have big unknown in Cortes and Sears.

Quote from LynchMob on August 3, 2025, 12:43 pmWhy Bogarts hitting so high in the lineup? Can't / shouldn't he be below our newly acquired "big bats"?
X is not a "big bat" ... I don't watch every at bat of every game ... but it seems common that the results of X at bats I've seen lately (ie. this season) are "scratch hits" ...

K's with bases-loaded in bottom of the 3rd ... sigh ...

Quote from fenn68 on August 3, 2025, 2:50 pmHeard an interview with Cortes ... sure sounds as though he expects to get a start ... soon. That 6 man rotation (or letting a SP skip a start) sure seems a coming attraction ... at least in AUG.
Also, in an interview with Musgrove ... now progressed to legit bullpen sessions and HE seems to believe he could be ready for (in) SEPT ... even if just in the pen.
All that (with King soon) really creates a log jam for the 26 man considering few have minor league options.

Well, Machado struck out in the 3rd with one out and runners on 2nd and 3rd ... contact would have scored a run. In the first he struck out with a runner on.
Laureano hit into a DP with 2 on, no outs in the 2nd.
So, Bogaerts to fits right in for RHH.
In the past 30 days:
Bogaerts 302/362/427 is the reason they are not moving him out of #5 ... for now.
Laureano was 295/351/534 over the past 30. So, on paper a push but would guess Shildt actually wants to see Laureano in action ... and will the shift of leagues and coming out of a hitter's park will effect him. Probably the same thinking with O'Hearn.
