Gillaspie continues to look good and should be a good depth option at El Paso. Hart was even better and certainly will claim a LH RP slot in the bullpen with Matsui going on the 15 day IL to start the season.
Like what I saw with the Padres barreling the ball even though some of those didn't fall in for hits. Cronenworth and Merrill looked very comfortable and ready to start the season; Castellanos seemed it have taken to 1b well and he and Sheet had some good AB, not chasing pitches and driving up the count. Seems like whatever Souza is doing as hitting coach is working.

Heading to Arizona on 15 March and staying until the following Sunday morning. Hope to catch one or two games.

Isn't McKenzie a minors deal? No waivers needed if he's not on the 40 man.
McKenzie, Gonzalez, and Buehler are all on minor league deals ... so not a waiver issue BUT what we don't know is if they have opt outs if not put on the 26 man roster (and when that opt out is effective).
Did hear that Buehler's opt out is on or about March 25th. He probably would be sought by other teams if he did opt out (so likely would).
Side note ... as I recall a team cannot trade a FA signing until June 15 (unless they agree) and I think that works for ML veterans even on minor league deals. Makes some of decision making a bit more challenging if no one clearly stands out.
Marquez cannot be optioned off the 26 man and that may be the debate between him and Buehler ... with Sears to AAA and, initially, Waldron (out of options on the IL). At some point (May?) Canning enters the picture and could be better than either. One for long relief? How do you make room in the loaded pen considering Marinaccio is also out of options and from the right side Miller, Estrada, Adam (looking more like being ready for opening day), and Morgan taking 4 slots. Morejon, Peralta, Hart (has an option) the three from the left side while Matsui in the IL (probably).
Preller has to think opening day and then soon after with the IL returnees ... what is best for the season and who he is willing to allow to move on.

With all of the depth in RP, I smell a trade coming by AJP to strengthen whatever hole the team feels it has just prior to Opening Day. Go Pads!

I have been in Campusano's corner purely based on his hitting potential BUT even after the Padres cleared the deck giving Campusano clear run as the back-up catcher ... sadly, Campusano has had an abysmal offense performance and usually against the minor leaguers / major leaguers just easing into shape. Does Preller now move on (if another alternative surfaces)?
Enter Matt Thaiss who has an opt out 5 days prior to the season if not on the 26 man roster in BOST. IF not Boston offers him to the other teams and can trade him. 30 year old veteran ... not a great hitter but decent defensive option for a back-up. Would probably only take a mid-level prospect.

Saw Live BP for Canning and Adam.
Both looked good….asked Adam about the knee and he said he was “good to go”.
Salas played in a AA game against the Gigantes….first 2 AB’s were a 100+ mph screaming rbi double down the RF line and a hard hit ground ball single up the middle for 2 more rbi.
Asked him after about his back and he said it was “100%”.
I’m guessing Adam starts the season 0n the roster but apparently Joe has only thrown like 1 BP this spring.
Bringing him along slow….with 2 days off in the first 8 games I’m gonna guess he starts on the il and they keep an xtra BP arm for the first week or so as they could use a 4 man rotation if they want….or put Buehler/Marquez in the rotation to make 1-2 starts and see how they do.

I think it is sounding like both Musgrove and Canning will start the season on the IL, that way they can keep both Buehler and Marquez on the roster, at least to start the season.
I believe they will also start Adam and Matsui on the IL as well. Giving them plenty of rest to avoid bouncing back and forth from the IL during the season. They have plenty of BP options to start the season.
It also appears that Song will need an IL trip, allowing them to keep France to start the season. Allowing France and Castellanos some ML regular season ABs to see who is the better option to keep during the long season.

Hadn't considered Musgrove to the IL to start the season but it is true he hasn't appeared in a regular ST game thus far. Musgrove says he is healthy and we have 3 tough teams to open the season, so I think he's going to do all he can to be in the rotation to start the season but it is a long season. If on opening day roster, he might be on a pitch limit, max 75, which bodes for the Padres to keep a Long Relief/6th SP like Buehler vice another high leverage bullpen arm like Rodriguez.
Like what I've seen in Gillaspie and Wolf, so may have a little more depth behind Canning getting fully healthy and Waldron coming back from his surgery. McKenzie, Sears and Gonzales have not looked good.
