Spring Training 2026
Quote from Randy Manese on February 22, 2026, 2:51 pmCampy hasn't got a hit yet but he's made decent contact despite his one K; hasn't looked that bad behind the plate. On the other hand, Song's first time in a game didn't inspire much confidence that he is going to be a key part of this team. Both AB's were against LH pitchers, so willing to give him a mulligan but looked very tentative and failed to cover the outside of the plate on MEH fastballs. He did get around on a pitch in his last AB and the shortstop made a good play on it to keep it from getting through to the OF. Hoping to see the adjustments by Song as ST progresses - we really need his LH bat to be at around major league average.
Not a great game from McKenzie and Adcock didn't look very good. I like what I saw of Boyle - sneaky fast and gets good location - could play up enough to at least be an option from El Paso. Vasquez showed more velocity and seems to have the confidence and poise to stay in the #4 slot in the rotation. Waldron did surprisingly well yesterday and might have put himself back in the picture as a swingman.

Quote from WindsorUK on February 23, 2026, 10:38 amOkay Padre fans, who's the speedster we keep on the roster for late inning base running/ defensive coverage( Bryce Johnson)?
Are there any obvious choices? Or do we risk going forward with no speed on the bench?

Quote from Randy Manese on February 23, 2026, 11:28 amI like Samad Taylor to replace Johnson on the 40 man. Can play INF and OF and even faster than Johnson.

Quote from Randy Manese on February 24, 2026, 10:59 amJust read about the strange condition Waldron has that is going to sideline him for an extended period. Wonder if they can put him on the 60 day IL to get him off the active roster without losing him to waivers?

Padres right-hander Matt Waldron has been shut down for the time being and is considered week to week, manager Craig Stammen told the team’s beat (via Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune). The right-hander recently underwent a procedure for a hemorrhoid.
Depending on the specific procedure ... this is usually short term annoying but maybe for an athlete some extra down time is advised.

Quote from fenn68 on February 24, 2026, 1:39 pmThink Marinaccio (out of options) has a lot of RP upside to bring out in ST.
He had an excellent 2022 with the NYY ... his 2023 and 2024 were decent ... and looked good in his brief Padre work in 2025. Has velocity and gets Ks.
Not sure why he has been somewhat on the fringe the past few years but a good ST could make him a minor trade chip OR earn him a spot on the Padres' 26 man allowing for a trade of a higher profile (bigger return) RP such as Estrada or Adam.
Had a good day today ... so a watch target.

Quote from Randy Manese on February 24, 2026, 4:15 pmJohnson had a very good day at the plate today while Taylor did not. Still think its going to be neck and neck for the final back-up OF spot (primarily a CF back-up is the concern) but the Padres do have options if Merrill is out for an extended period with both Laureano and Tatis capable of playing CF. Song finally got to hit against a RHP, a guy throwing 100 mph, and didn't look overmatched - rumor has it that he will be tested in the OF also as a back-up to the corner guys. Would like to see him stroke some solid line drives to show he can handle higher velocity than he saw in the KBO.
Castellanos looked good at the plate and handled 1b well. Andujar and Miranda continue to hit. Bradgley starting to look dominant but Marco Gonzalez pitched like he's been away from competition for a year or more. Velocity seemed to be below 90 and a lot of hard hit balls by the Cubs before being pulled. Wolf and O Cruz might be better options from the left side if Gonzalez can't do any better than he did today.
