Quote from 3fingersplit on March 4, 2025, 10:14 pmI got a chance to see Nick Pivetta pitch today before I headed back home to San Diego and I know it's spring training and it's a work in progress but Pivetta is a bulldog. He is just an in your face type of pitcher and I mean that in a good way...really good command, runs his fastball in and out and he has a serious breaking ball. Props to AJ Preller for signing this guy which is basically a two year contract (23 million dollars) before the opt outs begin after the 2026 season. 1-million dollar salary and 1.5 million dollar signing bonus for a total of 2.5 million this season. Next season (2026) his salary jumps to 19 million plus 1.5 million signing bonus that was prorated from 2025 for a total of 20.5 million. 2027 salary is 14 million and 2028 is 18 million with player opt outs after 2026 and 2027. Hosmer's money comes off the books next year so it works out perfect. Barring any injury, I think Pivetta is going to be a very good back of the rotation guy and the more I see of him the more I like him...Cease, King, Darvish, Pivetta and Hart with Vasquez, Waldron Kolek depth possibilities.
Hopefully he is back on the mound next Monday or Tuesday when I am back in Peoria...I love spring training in Arizona
Go Padres!!!

This is how I see it.
They didn't bring Hart in to pitch in AAA.
Also the only lefty so IMO it's his job to lose.
Anxious to see him pitch

Quote from fenn68 on March 5, 2025, 8:09 amAgree on Hart ... plus he has no minor league options (seems all the other SP candidates for #5 do). They gave him a ML contract so will give him some time to show (or not) the stuff they saw from Korea.
With both Reynolds and Hoeing having ST injuries ... may not be ready with a curtailed ST to begin on the 26 man ... Hart may slot in as the long RP if not holding on the the #5 slot. Based on early showings ... Waldron seem to be the top challenger with Vasquez and Brito struggling. Kolek looked good but probably a long shot to bump up at the start of the season.
Not going to be a packed schedule with after the first week ... generally 6 games per week ... so enough "rest" stops so as to not require a 6th SP.

Quote from fenn68 on March 5, 2025, 8:20 amPadres just signed Jose Iglesias to a minor league deal with an invite to ML camp.
I have no expectations he can play to his 2024 numbers now at 35 and was not that productive in 2023 BUT he is a middle INF with a good glove still and might worm his way into the bench (at the cost of Rosario I guess). If nothing else ... insurance in AAA (until he opts out) if a middle INF gets injured.
Also in the overthinking mode ... does give Preller some wiggle room if he tries to make a deal for a stronger option for the DH role and needs to include Rosario as part of the package.

Quote from MrPadre19 on March 5, 2025, 10:08 amTo be honest if he hits it ST I'd be fine with putting him at SS,X back at 2b,Crone to 1b and Arraez fulll time DH.
I like Crone at 2b.....but not too excited about X at SS and Arraez anywhere on the field.

Quote from 3fingersplit on March 5, 2025, 10:25 amJose Iglesias is this year's Donovan Solano...late signing that can play 3B, SS and 2B... can steal a base and on occasion put a ball in the seats and is still a very solid glove. I just surprised that nobody took a flyer on him before this and AJ just doing AJ things and Shildt has got to be loving the versatility and possibilities of having Iglesias on the 26 man if and when he gets there. I am bummed that Rosario or Wade may go away...Rosario is ready in my opinion and I would love to see what he can do at the big league level for more than just a cup of coffee and Wade is just a solid utility guy that does all the little things right that never gets mentioned. I'm hoping that Ornelas gets a chance also because the guy can hit.
Having lost so many guys from last years team, I think that AJ has quietly put together a really good roster and people should not sleep on the Padres despite what ESPN has to say but then again...who gives any credence to what ESPN has to say anyway.

Quote from fenn68 on March 5, 2025, 6:12 pmDid see the note on his contract ... if he makes the club a base of $3MM plus $1MM incentives. Plus has the standard 3 opt outs if he does not and is sent to the minors. That is a pretty steep price for insurance on the bench when should expect the regulars to play almost every day (and Iglesias is not a DH option). No idea what the minor league portion of his deal pays.
So, in one view, Padres added a ST insurance policy (maybe also for April and May) at little cost. Hard to see them paying him for a bench role at that level ... considering Rosario and Wade combined would be less with money left over. D0 agree that Iglesias would be a better SS back-up than either Wade or Rosario ... nothing else really in the system.
Does make me think a trade that includes Rosario is possible .... maybe for a stronger option for the 9th bat in the line-up ... DH/1B?
Side: I think the Padres a initially committed to Arraez at 1B. In part to make him happy in an effort to maximize his hitting and maybe making it easier to extend him after the season. Padres really like his skill set and have very little offense coming near term internally. Might be the easiest (and cheapest) to re-sign among himself, Cease, and King.
