Too early to say Jackson Merrill opens the 2023 season in San Antonio? Not hard contact but in the right places. Also turned a nice DP.

Only the first hit was off a legit major leaguer. The second hit was off of a 27 year old with no big league experience. The third was off of a 28 year old with 2.1 innings. It was a very impressive performance for a kid who is still almost 2 months shy of his 20th birthday though. If he doesn't go straight to AA I bet he gets there quickly.

Could Merrill beat out Kim? Making Kim a super utility bench piece (300-400 AB's) in 2023...?

Not beat out Kim but eventually (next year, possibly) replace him when the Padres decide to move Kim's salary to address a more pressing need.

Or when they shuffle the INF if Manny does not re-sign after the opt out.
Although I see a Manny re-signing as PROBABLE, I also see his departure as POSSIBLE. So there is that.
Although every projection on Merrill is making him elite … have to see him in AA to really gauge how close he is to being an effective ML player. Would not want to see him burning any control by being up in 2023 (while still unproven and part time) and 2024 maybe IF other pieces fall together (or apart) or a mid-season call-up.

Padres trotted out what looked like one of the variations of their everyday lineup prior to Tatis coming back. So far, very effective and Teheran is doing OK.
