More about giving Kim exposure (and the Padres seeing him live) at both positions than anything else. Abrams is playing 2B more so as not to play either Tatis or Cronenworth every day this early in ST.
Would expect to see Abrams at both SS and 2B during ST.

Looks as though my long shot ... very long shot ... extremely long shot candidate for the last roster slot is actually starting at 3B ... Tanielu. Has a rep as a good hitter (3B/2B/1B), RHH but became a 6 year minor league FA out of Houston org (usually not a good sign). RHH PH and 1B alternative to Hosmer vs. some LHP?
Realistically will be in AAA but if he can hit ... a call-up is not beyond reach if O'Grady / Mateo just struggle in their early 2021 work.

Quote from fenn68 on March 2, 2021, 2:44 pmCastillo comes out early from a bullpen sim game ... forearm tightness (never a good sign).
I didn’t have him pencilled in for the opening roster given he barely has pitched for two years (no matter this “potential”) ... so not an immediate problem. Would guess he gets shut down for a few days (weeks) to have the issue settle and re-start with a ticket to EP.

Quote from fenn68 on March 2, 2021, 2:51 pmListened to an interview with Preller and heard some comments from Acee concerning Lamet. Although Lamet’s progress seems fine ... and if he is fully ready for Apr 1 great ... but Preller was pretty clear that setting him to be a factor late in the season / playoffs is the priority and will not push him to be ready for Apr 1.
Probably will not make the Apr 1 call until the last week ... then a question if it becomes a token 10 IL or longer as a factor as to which prospect comes in to take his place. Morejon is leader if a 5 man rotation but if they go 6 man because of the schedule in April ... Weathers? Gore? Baez? Bullpen days?

Quote from LynchMob on March 2, 2021, 3:11 pmMy long-shot, heart-based, prediction for 2021 (ie. an underdog I'm rooting for) ...
Miguel Diaz will pitch high-leverage innings in the post-season 🙂
Glad to see him get 2 good IPs today ...

Quote from hoffy51 on March 2, 2021, 5:21 pmI fully agree on Diaz. It's really good to see Abrams and Hassell III getting triples and doubles. Placement? I am hoping they can both start the season at Fort Wayne. When the finally get sent down, where do they go Peoria?

Quote from Brian Connelly on March 2, 2021, 7:02 pmHey! Lynch & Hoffy I'm glad you're in Miguel Diaz fan club too! When the roster clears out a little by Opening Day, I do predict that Diaz will eventually find his way back onto the 40-man before end of season if he can stay healthy. The first game I saw him pitch for Pads his stuff jumped off the screen; even more than Luis Perdomo's stuff, which could be really good at times. Extremely obvious MLB "stuff" if he can control it...

... they're already there! This year will be different. Since can't overlap with Minors ST, no one gets "sent down to Minors camp" until MLB camp is over. But will start to see less & less of the young guys in games later in ST I'm sure. When Pads set their roster, it sounds like about 25 of the 40+/- remaining guys will also "head out" FROM Peoria... TO the Alternate Site; presumably in San Diego. So the remaining 15 +/- I guess will remain behind in Peoria to join the "AA & lower" Spring Training when it starts; probably including Hassell, Abrams, & other really young guys slated for A-ball.
The April Alt site will be the equivalent of the "AAA team".... for the most part. Now that all the full season Minors teams are slated to start near same time, some of the older clearly AAA guys like Lake Bachar, Brett Kennedy, some OF, etc that are NOT in MLB camp will likely join the majority of the Alt site to compose the AAA team.
Better for placement IMO for all the levels to start same time, so don't have 19 y.o. in AAA for a month. But still curious to see how they handle the taxi squad after all the Minors teams start playing. Seems like eventually they might just get rid of it & revert back to "normal" rules? Maybe by All star Break?

Quote from fenn68 on March 3, 2021, 5:02 amI have not seen anything on the Padres having an “alternative site” in SD for 2021.
Unlike in 2020, the Peoria facility is open and will have been active for over a month (with safety protocols). Not sure any real benefit to move a large number of players from Peoria to SD for one month before they get redeployed to their minor league cities. If anything it is safer to keep them in Peoria ... plus can play games with the rest of minor leaguers (and potentially against players from other organizations).
Not sure USD is even available in Apr ... USD is playing baseball now ... not sure about students on campus in an uncontrolled environment.
taxi squad is a different question.
