So What Went Wrong ?

The season is in it's final week for the Padres and after next Sunday in San Francisco the post mortem will begin but I was curious what you all think was the turning point of this season....there is no single right or wrong answer...just a chance for everybody to chime in...

For me I am still trying to figure out why we got Adam Frazier......good ballplayer but limited in my opinion and the chain  reaction toll it took on this team really caused a disconnect......I guess the idea was to get rid of Hosmer and slide Cronenworth to 1B and let Frazier play 2nd but that never happened and I know people will blame Hosmer for all of the troubles this team had but he is a key member of this clubhouse and AJ screwed the chemistry when he came up with nothing and Hosmer is still here but now you have to platoon everybody because of Frazier......Needed pitching but had nothing to trade because AJ had already traded the farm system away in all of these stupid 4 and 5 player for 1 deals that I said repeatedly are stupid and would come back to bite the Padres in the Ass and made sure that he traded away 90% of the young pitching in the farm system.....for what ?

Agree or disagree.....no problem as there is plenty of blame to go around

PS......I can't wait for next Sunday about 5pm to get here as it will be the very last time I have to see Tommy Pham in a Padre Uniform.

I go back to ST and the expectations from the NATIONAL media … Padres one of the best teams in MLB with focus on what could be the BEST starting 5 pitchers: Darvish, Snell, Lamet, Musgrove, and Paddack. A legit call based on their previous ML successes.

That did not come to be.

1. Lamet never recovered from his 2020 injury … non factor all season

2. Snell was a disaster for the first half before regaining his elite form … then he got injured (again).

3. Paddack regressed … injured … back and injured again

4. Darvish started good … injured … did not come back strong until late

5. Musgrove was the only one who delivered (and above most projections).

Now couple that with the organizational decision to limit innings early in the season (rely on the pen) so the SP would stay healthy and strong for the final run just did not work for the long run. SP did not stay healthy and the pen burned out.

If the SP was anywhere near expectations the Padres would be in the playoffs. They are all back in 2022 with the return of Clevinger (if healthy he is really good) … so SP may again be the key to 2022 success without needing Weathers / Gore / Martinez / Morejon to carry a major role (but providing depth).

Probably should comment on the offense. Except for Pham … the starters pretty much played to their histories. If expectations were higher … that may be an issue with the individuals setting the expectations.

(note: I too can’t wait for Pham to be out of SD)

On Frazier, I actually like the deal. I guessing that they wanted Frazier for an on-base hitter for 2B for insurance if Tatis’ shoulder pops again (Cronenworth to SS) or if Tatis to the OF (Cronenworth to SS). Hosmer coverage would be a factor but secondary. Those scenarios are still in play for 2022. Doubt they were comfortable giving the regular SS role to Kim or the regular 2B role to Profar.

Offense need to be better for 2022 and that likely has to come from a key add (or two) for LF/DH … unless a couple of current players have “career years”. One other factor, no idea how to address this unless just a 2021 anomaly … players going into very deep very long slumps. By very deep I mean OPS below .600 for weeks (a month). Not worried about Tatis slumping for OPS 1.100 to .850 but Machado - Hosmer - Grisham - Myers all succumbed to that problem … and of course Pham.

I’m happy with Frazier.

I agree though that his acquisition was part of a bigger plan that didn’t happen.

With the DH next year(never thought I’d say this but “please”)….Having Frazier allows us to give players days off using the DH without losing much from the line up.

However…based on how this season ended I think AJ will try to acquire a Big Bat(tm) to be our DH and if Hosmer is still a Padre Frazier instead just ends up just improving our bench.

IMO the best move we can make in the offseason is to trade Hosmer (somehow) and acquire someone like Cruz or Soler to be the DH and play Manny/Tatis/Frazier/Crone around the IF.

What went wrong? The name of this game is pitching and defense, so, I think not having two or three guys (SPs) at AAA that can help us out in such a long season had a huge impact, trying to get away with so many bullpen days in a 162 game season was just impossible,  I know that guys get hurt and maybe a bullpen game here and there was going to be needed, but it was just to much to ask, that being said, thank God Pham is gone, wish Profar didnt exercise his player option, it seems that every time he plays the field he makes a dumb play or two, also dont see a point of having Marisnick back, and what can we say about Daniel Hudson, it was probably the worse pitcher acquired at the trade deadline, and we gave up Thompson who had much better number down the stretch for the Nationals on top of another prospect,  Melancon option might be picked up, but wish we get a real closer, one that pitches to contact it is just not gonna cut it against good ball clubs in a playoff run,

Both Melancon and Marisnick are on “mutual options” and almost always one side declines.

Melancon has a mutual option at $5MM (against a Club buyout of $1MM)

Marisnick has a mutual option at $4MM (against a Club buyout of $500K)

Stammen and Johnson are on “club options” both should get exercised (not too costly and need RP in 2022). Consider the net cost after paying the buyout and the roster replacement.

Stammen has a club option at $4MM (against a club buyout at $1MM)

Johnson has a club option at $3MM (against a club buyout at $1MM)

And then there is Profar on a “player option” at $6.5MM … a slam dunk to be exercised by Profar.
