San Diego Padres at Chicago White Sox: Sept 19-21

PreviousPage 3 of 4Next

Yeh, Padres wanted a year in / year out contender that make the playoffs and then roll the dice on winning it all in October ... they actually have achieved that over the past few years and still have a core going forward.

I understand the frustration when a pitcher fails ... but looking at the big picture .... in 2025 the Padres have yielded the fewest runs in the NL (2nd fewest since the All-Star break) ... and without Musgrove and King/Darvish for over half the season. Have to credit to Preller and the coaching staff for what may be the most effective total pitching staff in the NL.

Offense is the conundrum. Bottom half on the NL in runs scored (that is more important than the more analytical stats). Individually most of the individuals in the line-up are "above average" (OPS, wRC+) ... even post-All Star break as they slump. Yet not delivering runs. Is this just one off season in that respect? Machado, Tatis, Merrill, Laureano, Sheets, Bogaerts, Cronenworth, and Fermin will return .... only Fermin (and remember he is a catcher) is "slightly" below league average in hitting in 2025 (some though below their career levels ... and clearly fan expectations). So, the offense talent is there to return eight "above average" starters for 2026 ... some with much higher potential than 2025 performance ... so with a bit of turnaround in productive AB should score more runs. Career suggest they are better than their 2025s.

Hopefully they re-sign King ... a SP of Pivetta, King, Musgrove, Darvish, Vasquez along with a pen that may lose Suarez but is upgraded with Miller for a full season should be as good (or better) that the 2025 version.

Put those offensive / defensive projections together ... and I can see another playoff team and with Pivetta, King, Musgrove as SP in the playoffs and legit shot at winning it all in 2026. Preller needs only to "tinker" around the edges to fill out an effective roster ... and he is pretty good about that.

Optimistic for sure ... too optimistic maybe ...

Side: 2025 is not over and with this core team not unthinkable that the pitching can get hot and control the other team's offense in the playoffs while the bats come alive enough to really progress in the playoffs. A "hot" Manny, Tatis, Merrill ... at the same time ... can do it. They have the talent.

The Sunday game I will be in attendance at Rate field. Then follow up with a Tuesday night game at Wrigley Field. First trip to Chicago, except layovers at O'Hare.

I look forward to some good weather, a couple of cold beers, and hopefully a laugher victory for the brown and gold!

Best place to watch an MLB game- in the bleachers on a sunny afternoon in Wrigley!

Unfortunately Wrigley is a night game

This is more like it. Padres score 7 runs for the win. Merrill goes 2 for 4 and another HR.

Darvish held them to 2 runs.

Now, win tomorrow. King on the mound.

GO PADRES!

Good bounce back game for King! Bodes well for the WS tournament starting in a few weeks time.

I would have preferred a sweep. But, I will take 2 of 3.

King was really good today.

Brewers tomorrow. Pivetta on the mound.

GO PADRES!

Great fans at Wrigley. Although you'll miss out on the sunshine, here's to great day/night at the ballpark🌭🍺

Dodgers lost. Padres move up to 3 games back. Actually 4 with the tie breaker.

I know there a slim chance of the Padres winning the NL West. But this is baseball and anything can happen.

The Dodgers play their final 6 games on the road, where they don't play as well, in Arizona and in Seattle. Dbacks will be battling for a wild card spot and the Mariners battling for the AL West title.

The Padres play the final 6 games at home, where they have played much better on the road, first against the Brewers, who have clinched their division and first round bye, and then the Dbacks.

I can hope.

Keep the faith!

GO PADRES!

Yeah, Fenway was a blast. Did that almost 30 years ago
