Neither Giolito nor Canning are make their case to survive the return of Marquez and Waldron.
Saw a graphic on the TV last night showing Giolito had the worst percentage of strikes thrown for a SP with at least five starts ... and Canning was fourth worst. Both have terrible WHIP ... high walk rate and high BAA. Neither are going deep into games due to a LOT of pitches ... Giolito is averaging less that 5 innings a start and Canning not much better ... that is hurting the pen.
Who goes first? How much leeway to the give them considering Canning had a late start to the season recovering from the Achilles injury and Giolito a late start due to contract issues. How much faith do they have in Marquez given his poor start to the season or Waldron who has fluctuated between good and bad?
I think this is a much harder decision by Preller (thinking the full season) than we fans think (as we only see the poor performances in the moment) and have no consequences of being wrong.

I'm getting pretty tired of hearing about how good the opposing starter was every time the offense lays an egg. May was just blowing fastballs by them.

At some level I understand the local (and team) reporters / announcers not being overly critical of the local team / players. No real upside in that. Clearly pointing out problems is fair reporting but just report it and let the info speak for itself ... and stop.
However, I am getting pretty tired of overly compensating with praise in the light of significant under performances. Add to that the commentary when the Padres (or an individual) under performs the obligatory "baseball is a tough game" (apparently is not as tough for the other 29 teams) or comments such as he just has to throw strikes (I guess that is easy if players can do it just with a desire to throw strikes ... are they not trying now?).
Maybe more clean reporting ... more pure analytical work ... and a lot less free forum commentary. Games are getting more difficult to watch or listen to ... as are the sports talks shows.

Isn't it amazing how many.... how shall I put this?....unremarkable pitchers our offense makes look the second coming of Koufax or Gibson?
There is definitely something wrong with the way our guys are approaching each game.

Canning is coming off his best performance of the season. The BP was solid.
The offense finally came around scoring 6 runs on 14 hits. Merrill goes 3 for 5 and a 2-run HR. Tatis continues to hot going 3 for 5 and 2 RBI.
NoI like Taylor batting 2nd after Tatis and Merrill 3rd
Let's hope the offense continues to come alive against the Rangers.

Now that Tatis can no longer hit home runs I’m on board with him leading off.
If/when his power returns I like him 2nd or 3rd
