That was a big win.
Couldn’t afford to keep the losing streak going against a team we’re competing for a playoff spot with.
Plus with the Mets upcoming and 3 more against St:.
We need to go 4-3 in the next seven 🙏🙏🙏

Super solid outing by Kolek today! And the bats made some noise as well.

Marinaccio got into the game today ... good for him. Sort of the odd man out in EP all season out of the pen and very little discussion of him as a call-up ... until a few days ago.
So, took a look at his resume. RHRP, 30 years old ... DFA by NYY (claimed by CWS in 2024) then DFA by CWS (claimed and then traded for by SD for Cash). So not the profile that we would expect much.
However, he did pitch part of 3 seasons with the NYY ... 101 games (114.2 innings) ... a decent ERA (3.22) but excellent WHIP (1.19) built on yielding only 75 hits (.188 BAA). Add that he is a strikeout pitcher with 137 in those 114.2 innings. Does have control issues with 66 BB. Not sure why with those ML stats he got DFA by NYY and the lowly CWS?
Quality RP seem to pop up out of nowhere ... maybe in the SD system and Niebla's guidance he can fill useful RP role (note out of options in 2026 but will have 4 years control and still at league minimum. So could be a real find noting his strike out profile with a FB only in the mid-90s.
He, Morgan, the future of Rodriguez, Pena, Castro, Hawkins, Neighbors ... all could impact 2026 might make it "easier" to deal from the ML pen / not sign Suarez or deal from that young RP depth.

Kolek is excellent consistently on the Road ... 10 starts / ERA around 2.40. However, for some unknown dynamic, at PETCO ... 4 starts / ERA 9.45 and all 4 were bad. Consider:
At Petco ER allowed:
6 ... 2X
5 ... 1X
4 ... 1X
AWAY ER allowed:
4 ... 1X
3 ... 3X
2 ... 1X
1 ... 1X
0 ... 4 X
Amazingly no clunkers at HOME and all clunkers AWAY. Calling Niebla!

I am glad the Padres got at least a split with the Card. They move up to 4 games back as the Dodgers lost.
Kolek looked good today and the offesne came alive to today scoring 9 runs on a whopping 16 hits.
Time to go home. Bring on the Mets.

I’m not sure where we’d be this year without Vasquez, Kolek & Bergert pitching as they have.

Ending the skid and winning the last two was huge!. Getting the big lead also kept the top four BP arms rested for the Mets series
