San Diego Padres at San Francisco Giants: Sept 13-15

The Padres are coming off a two-game series split and have lost 3 of their last 4 games. Now, they head to San Francisco after losing the series at Petco last weekend. The Padres need to step it up and string wins together. I don't know if the extreme heat was a factor last weekend, but the weather will be a lot cooler this time. This will be the last time this season the Padres will play the Giants.
Cease is coming off a rough outing giving up 4 runs and 6 hits in 6 IP against the Giants at Petco. He has been struggling since being pulled after 1 inning in the rained out game in Pittsburgh. This will be a Cease/Webb rematch of last Saturday
Musgrove is coming off his worst start since returning from the IL collapsing after solid 3 innings and allowing 6 runs on 8 hits against the Giants. I hope he does a lot better against them in San Francisco.
Pérez is coming off his best start as a Padres pitching 6.1 shut out innings. Since joining the Padres he has a 2.84 ERA and a 2.36 BAA.
Nando has proven to be a huge upgrade in the OF after he returned from the IL. In yesterday's game he hit a HR and robbed a HR in the same inning. He is 9th in HR in franchise history just passing Caminiti. Jackson Merrill has 23 HR and 16 SB. Four more SB and he will have a 20-20 season in his rookie year.

Padres(82-65) at Giants(72-75) - 5.5 games back

This weekend should be critical in altering the Wild Card positioning. AZ, NYM, and ATL all have 16 games remaining while SD has only 15 .... not a lot of time left to make the Wild Card if a teams loses ground this weekend.
Consider losses (that cannot be erased):
64 ... AZ playing MILW in AZ
65 ... SD playing SF in SF
66 ... NYM playing PHIL in PHIL
67 ... ATL playing LAD in ATL
Two game lead over ATL (with a game in hand) is good but not comfortable. Padres do have to return to winning. At least on paper the three Wild Card contenders this weekend are playing the three Division leaders ... that should hand some losses on their records ... and since they are the furthest behind, have to root for the LAD to sweep ATL first but all three getting swept would be satisfying. The match-ups will make this a fun set of series.

This feels like an important series. The Giants aren't a bad team, but they aren't on the level of the Astros, Dodgers and DBacks. We need to take advantage of the games against them and the games against the White Sox.

fenn68, I am not rooting for the Dodgers to sweep the Braves. I would rather root for the Braves to sweep the Dodgers. The Padres are not out of the division race just yet. Especially, since the Padres still have 3 games with the Dodgers and the Padres have played the Dodgers well this year and owning the tiebreaker.
Not saying it is going to happen. But, if the Padres sweep the Giants and win the first game over the Astros and the Braves sweep the Dodgers in all 4 games, the Padres would be 1.5 games back of the Dodgers. If the Padres sweep the Giants and the Braves win 3 of 4 over the Dodgers, the Padres would be 2.5 games back of the Dodgers. Anything can happen in baseball.
The Padres need to do their part and win.

Cease needs to have a big game tonight. This is exactly the kind of game SD got him for, and he needs to perform tonight!!

Padres win and beat Webb and the Giants.
The good Cease showed up tonight. He was outstanding. Both Arraez and Merrill go 3 for 4 and Nando hits his third HR in three straight games.
The Dbacks and Dodgers lost to the Braves and the Mets won. Tomorrow's game between the Dodgers and Braves will be a good one with two of MLB's top pitchers and a marquee matchup: Flaherty vs Sale.
The Padres move up to 4.5 games behind the Dodgers and retake the top spot in the wild card race.
Musgrove on the mound tomorrow.

That was about as complete a win as any we've had this season. Really solid in all facets of the game. That's the version of Cease we need. Congratulations to Lockridge on his major league debut.

I would like to see Lockridge hitting DH in game 2 instead of Peralta. He has pretty good numbers in the minors and has a .325 avg at Triple-A El Paso.

Im with Ultra….not giving up on the Division just yet although LA has an easy schedule after Atl.
As long as we win we don’t need Atl to lose so I’m rooting against the dodgers.
Get within 3 by the time we play them will make it more fun if nothing else.
Just win and we can all enjoy rooting against LA

Need solid outings from both Java Joe & Martin Perez as the Pads face two rookie GiAnts pitchers in Mason Black (on Sat.) and Landon Roupp (on Sun.). I want a sweep of BoMel & the GiAnts! Go Pads!
