San Diego Padres at San Francisco Giants: August 11-13

PreviousPage 2 of 3Next

The Padres won and take the series from the Giants and the Dodgers lost that include Ohtani htting into a triple play.

They beat two of their best pitchers and now are in a first place tie with the Dodgers.

Cortes was good tonight and Merrill has come alive hitting a double and a HR.

Let's get out the brooms.

GO PADRES!

Padres 1st place

They have won 13 of their last 16 games and 1 game away from a tie for the 3rd best record in MLB and 2nd best in the NL, which would mean a bye week. But, still alot of season left.

I just read that the last time we had even a share of the division lead this late in the season was in 2010. It feels pretty good. Now they just need to take advantage of these 6 games against the Dodgers coming up to open up a lead and bring it home.

Since the All-Star break the Padres are 16-8 ... second best record in the NL (behind MILW). LAD, Cubs, Mets all have losing records. Although we all know performance (results) can turn on a dime ... anything close to that disparity bodes well for a good playoff position.

PHIL will be interesting watch ... Padres are a couple of games behind and with MILW clearly the front runner ... PHIL and MILW get the first round byes ... but the Padres have done better than PHIL by a couple games since the All-Star break so a chance the Padres could sneak into the bye slot.

With a good team ... never like to be in a 3 game set (even at home) where just some bad luck / a couple of top SP can spell the end. For me, getting the bye is a good objective.

In that post-All Star analysis .. in the NL the Padres are running second to MILW in most key pitching / hitting stats.

The one that is surprising is they are 2nd in SLG ... while many seem to focus on the lack of HR (11th in the NL) that appears to be offset by doubles (1st in NL) and triples in the SLG calculation.

So, winning ... pitching strong ... hitting strong, reason of optimism.

Game 3 Lineup
1. Tatis RF
2. Arraez  DH
3. Machado 3B
4. Merrill CF
5. Bogaerts SS
6. O'Hearn 1B
7. Laureano LF
8. Cronenworth 2B
9  Diaz C

Nice to get a blowout win ... rested the pen and a day off tomorrow should have everyone fresh for the LAD.

The Padres own the Giants. They have swept them and won the season series. They are now in sole first place by half a game, at least for the moment. The Padres are guarenteed a first place tie going to L.A. or they could be 1 game ahead of the Dodgers depending in the outcome of the Dodgers/Angels series.

Pivetta was outstanding. Every starter got a at least one hit. Laureno has gone 3 for 4, 2 RBI, 1 HR,

Let's go to LA and beat the Dodgers.

GO PADRES!

As it turns out Fermin and Lureano weren't just upgrades. They turned out to be big time upgrades. Catching has gotten so much better. Fermin is so much better than Maldonado. The OF is now formidable with Laureano/Merrill/Tatis and Sheets is a solid 4th outfielder and DH and Bryce Johnson is a solid 5th outfielder, who is hitting .313 avg. The Padres finally, after so long, have a much needed solid bottom of the lineup.
