Monday August 11 - 6:45pm, TV: San Diego Cox 83
RHP Yu Darvish(1-3, 6.51 ERA, 23 K, .248 BAA) vs RHP Logan Webb(10-8, 3.24 ERA, 165 K, .265 BAA)Tuesday, August 12 - 6:45pm, TV: San Diego Cox 83
LHP Nestor Cortes(1-1, 7.11 ERA, 11 K, .222 BAA) vs LHP Robbie Ray(9-5, 2.85 ERA, 148 K, .204 BAA)Wednesday, August 13 - 12:45pm, TV: San Diego Cox 83
RHP Nick Pivetta11-4, 2.94 ERA, 139 K, .193 BAA) vs RHP Kai-Wei Teng(1-1, 5.40 ERA, 8 K, .226 BAA)The Padres head to San Francisco to begin 4 straight NL West showdowns. That is 13 straight games against the Giants and Dodgers with the first 6 on the road then 7 at home--4 against the Giants and 3 against the Dodgers. We will see alot Giants and Dodgers the next two weeks and then no more in the regular season.
The Padres are 4-2 against the Giants this season. They swept a 2-games series at home back in April and split 4 games in San Francisco in June.
Top NL West games: Dodgers(68-50) at Angels(56-62): One would think that the Dodgers will win this series, but they were swept by the Angels last May at Dodger Stadium. This is baseball. Anything can happen.
GO PADRES!

Quote from ultratvfan on August 11, 2025, 9:44 pmThe Padres win and Angel's beat the Dodgers. The Padres are now 1 game back.
Darvish was outstanding. Merrill came alive going 3 for 4 and 1 RBI. Kudos to Fermin for his 2-run HR.
Let's win game 2. Cortes on the mound.

Quote from fenn68 on August 12, 2025, 1:37 amAlso, the Wild Card contenders all lost ... Cubs, Mets, and first out (and looking like only other with a chance) CINN. Odds for at least a playoff slot are markedly improved with about 45 games to play. Still hot / cold streaks by any team come out of nowhere ... if the Padres keep on the current pace should bypass the Cubs for the #1 WC slot ... and home field advantage for the first series.
More importantly (and maybe more achievable) is passing the LAD for the NL West being only 1 game behind the LAD. As with the #1 WC, would get them home field advantage in the first series since as of now LAD only has the 3rd best record of he Division leaders. Need to pass PHIL to become 2nd and a first round bye ... only 3 games behind them and within reach.
Side: somewhat under the radar MILW has opened a pretty decent lead for the top record in the NL ... just not sure what they have going for them to be that successful.

I agree Fenn, nothing about the Brew Crew screams "juggernaut". I think they just must be playing solid baseball in all aspects...something we continue to strive for. But unfortunately, aren't yet achieving( Witness: Peralta's balk the other night-just flat out dumb, lack of situational hitting- Arraez, the leagues best bat maestro, grounding to 3rd with FTJ on 2nd with leadoff double in a tie game, etc.)
I do absolutely love the return though to the good ol' philosophy of get 'em on, get 'em over, get 'em in. Bunting, hit and run, stealing bases, ( mostly) hitting behind the runner. We're not a team that hits a lot of HR's so best to manufacture as many runs as possible, and let the best 'pen in MLB get us to the finish line.

GO PADRES!
It would be so cool if Cortes returns to his Yankee form of a few years ago. If that happens( along with King and Darvish returning to form), I REALLY like our chances of winning the West.
I know Miller is fun to watch but the trades that brought in Fermin, Laureano( I'm thinking O'hearn has a little Ryan Ludwick in him- hope I'm wrong) and Cortes will be THE factor in whether or not we progress through the WS tournament.
This could get fun.

Quote from fenn68 on August 12, 2025, 12:09 pmHealthy Pivetta, Cease, King, Darvish, and Cortes could set up winning a lot of games down the stretch ... especially with this bullpen. Really no weak spot and that should lead to a chance to win every start.
It will be interesting (and may be situational) as to how they deal with a playoff rotation. (a lot will have to do with how the navigate series one setting up series two, etc). Have to think (based on potential) their rotation would go Pivetta - King - Cease then Darvish if a 4th SP is needed and Cortes maybe going to the pen?

Quote from fenn68 on August 12, 2025, 12:25 pmAgree O'Hearn is somewhat on the bubble in my mind ... not sure the move out of BALT to SD will fit him ... but a FA after the season. Laureano fills the greater need (and for next year too) so think he will be a critical add.
Fermin was someone I know little of but early view shows me a catcher that might actually have a clue about hitting and that makes him critical for the bottom of the order vs Diaz/Maldonado. Seems fine on defense Plus at league minimum and long control. This seems like a real good deal.
Other than clearing being dominant out of the pen ... Miller hidden value is coming in to preserve games while not having to use (over use) the other key pen arms. He is a major benefit to Suarez, Adam, Estrada, Morgan, and Morejon by keeping the fresher.
Side on the add of O'Hearn ... for the month prior to the trade, Sheets was in the midst of a big slump ... so the inclusion of O'Hearn was a reasonable gamble to hedge Sheets' performance.

Quote from ultratvfan on August 12, 2025, 12:56 pmThe one thing I have noticed about the Giants the past several years is that they play very well and strong the first half of the season and then don't play as well in the second half. The Giants are currently 8 games back of the Padres and 9 back of the Dodgers.
