The Padres head to Pittsburgh after winning their first series this season. For the last two seasons the Padres have been fortunate to miss Skenes. Not this time.
I worry about Marquez, he struggled in his only start this season. Pivetta is coming off a solid outing against the Giants and now he will go up against Skenes in a marquee matchup. King struggled in his last start against the Red Sox after a solid outing against the Tigers. I expect that he will bounce back with another solid start.
After this series, the Padres will return home for a 4-game series against the Rockies and then the Mariners.

Diamondbacks(5-5) at Mets(5-4)
Astros(6-4) at Rockies(3-6)
Phillies(5-4) at Giants(3-7)

Marquez's last start for us?
My guess is it is unless he pitches extremely well.
Canning will be back before long.....

At this point three options considering Marquez' next start would be Saturday ... 1) Waldron but he has had only two rehab starts (3 inning and 4 innings) ... both good ... but it appears they would like him to get one more rehab start before being activated. 2) Sears who is on the 40 man and has had two decent / longer starts and could be called up and then optioned when they are ready with Waldron. 3) Activate Adam (Wednesday or Thursday), start Hart on Saturday sort of as a lead in a bullpen day (now with 9 RP), then make the add of Waldron before the next start thus delaying the move of a RP off the roster for a couple of weeks.
Not sure how bad Marquez has to be to get released before his next start (from the Padres' perspective) ... the key may be their view of Waldron vs Marquez going forward and any advantage on adding Adam this week over keeping Marquez for one more start.
A lot of dominoes in play ... especially if factoring in coming attractions in Canning and Matsui. How to preserve the max in reserve arms for the long run.

What are the chances we move Buehler into the Pen as a long man?
Guessing this would be an option if/when both Joe and Canning are back and effective.

Slim barring injuries. Problem is pushed to who gets dumped from the pen. If Canning and Musgrove are starting ... even if Marquez is released ... adding Buehler to the pen already trying to accommodate the returns Adam, Matsui, Waldron (none of whom can be optioned) does not fit. Basically they would have to drop four either from those or current pen arms.
Could option two of the better pen arms in Hart and Rodriguez and still have a head count issue. Not sure Buehler is better than the player he would bump.
Just my speculation but finding it hard to project Musgrove being ML ready (and effective) for months (if at all) considering not even near a rehab.

Padres win extending their streak to three. Marquez pitched surprisingly well and maybe, raising his trade value. The BP was solid giving Miller a break.
Every Padre has got at least one hit except Tatis and Sheets and the bottom of the lineup has 6 of the 11 hits.
I hope they beat Skenes tomorrow.

Knuckle curve was working and command was much improved ... but still threw a lot of pitches over 5 innings.
Keeps him in the rotation for another start at least and puts some more pressure on Buehler to get a good start.
Marinaccio continues to be effective ... and being out of options probably puts another RP on the bubble (Rodriguez does have an option as does Morgan ... tough call).

Apparently they figured out that Marquez was tipping all of his pitches in his first start. He got much better results today. It should buy him a little more leash and move him ahead of Buehler.

Offensively Castellanos looked the his best of the season ... inches him ahead of France whenever they add Song.
