The Brito experiment as a SP was a dismal failure at El Paso just like it was for the Yankees when the put him in the rotation last year.  Looking at what he did with the Padres earlier in the season, there were a couple of blips - one in mid-May and the other toward the latter part of June, but most of the time he was decent; I felt more comfortable with him on the mound more often than not than I did with de los Santos, Kolek or even Matsui.  Since we didn't need Vazquez to start until next week at the earliest, I can see getting a fresh arm up since I believe Jacob has to spend more time in the minors before he can be recalled.  I think Brito will benefit psychologically by getting away from the pitching hell-hole that is EP and also not having to continue to try to be a SP, when he knows he hasn't had a lot of success in that role.

I can see this kind of juggling act with the pitching staff to go on for the remainder of the season as Shildt/Niebla/Preller try to ensure that arms are strong and fresh as we head down the backstretch.   Padres pitchers seem to have a lot of confidence in how Shildt/Niebla take care of them so we can hope that all these moves will result in continuing to move the team forward for that playoff spot.    Go Padres!

I think Brito could potentially fill the same kind of role that Nick Martinez did. His fastball and changeup are good enough to get by out of the pen and he can probably give you multiple innings. His breaking stuff would need to improve to make it as a starter. I just would have liked to see him get a good outing or 2 in to feel confident that he's fully healthy and ready to go.

After that series in Pittsburgh we really needed a laugher.

This is not that

Merrill should have not ran home. I don't know if it was his decision or the third base coach's. But, Merrill makes up for it with a game tying HR in the 9th.

The Padres win their 6th in a row and their 29th comeback win of the season.

Except for the 2 HR he gave up, Martín Pérez was solid tonight. The BP held.

Let's take game two.

GO PADRES!

Merrill is unbelievably clutch. Picking up Scott from them paid off big time there.

Thanks Ultra!

Am I crazy or did our fortunes turn around only when you began to start the series threads??

Coincidence. But, thank you anyway.

Ultra, Where do you stand on the thought that there is "small coincidences and big coincidences vs just coincidences?" 😁

Was that the 3rd 9th inning game tying shot? I know he did It vs the bumbs, bucs and today. That Is awesome.

3 game-tying HRs in the 9th inning in the last 11 days. 4 game-tying or go ahead HRs in the 9th inning or later on the season. I just read that no player has ever had 3 in such a short span. I also saw that Adolis Garcia is the only other player in the expansion era with 4 in their rookie season.

Merrill also an unbelievable team player.  Haven't seen a post-game interview with him on this game but I'm sure he'll throw kudos to Perez for coming back from those HR's, the face plant run that Tyler Wade scored and how the bullpen shut the Marlins down.  He is all about winning and deserves rookie of the year for the impact he has had on our team besides his great play offensively and defensively.

Where would the Padres be if they still had Grisham instead of Merrill?
