San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Angels: April 17-19
Quote from Randy Manese on April 19, 2026, 5:39 amAgree, Waldron looked like a totally different pitcher than he has been with EP this season. Maybe he got too much rest between starts? Anyway, if he survives another start or two with decent results still think his best contribution to the Padres could be long relief. Unfortunately, it could continue to be ugly against the Rockies in Colorado.

Not sure the Padres (this version) needs a dedicated long reliever. Seems they get 5 innings out of the starters every game the just work the pen for 1-2 inning stints. Not sure of the last time a reliever was used for more than 2 innings (guessing it was Hart). If that is the profile ... "long" becomes of lesser value.
I would think a DFA of Waldron is probable ... he is 29 and in his ML time higher than average ERA. Only season where he was a regular was 2024 ... did pitch innings but only one lower than average month (Jun) with ERA. Always presented as what COULD be but is not delivering on that potential. A couple more starts until Canning is forcing a decision (unless another injury to a SP).
I guess we should not expect too much out of Canning ... other than a half season last year with the Mets he has been a below average pitcher with control issues. So far in EP ... control issues. He could be another boom or bust reclamation project. Does Waldron survive, does Canning emerge, or do we get a surprise with Sears if all else fails? No one else (at this time) is making a compelling case for elevation (maybe down the road Mendez).

Quote from fenn68 on April 19, 2026, 7:12 amI guess an added challenge is that Matsui comes off his rehab around May 4 (about the same time as Canning) ... neither can be optioned so need to address two 26 man roster slots at that time.
Going to be an interesting debate between what the "can do" with player options vs what the "should do" to maintain the strongest staff now and for the season.

Pitching has been great…just enough offense.
After the first week of the season I never would have dreamed we would be 15-7

Quote from ultratvfan on April 19, 2026, 4:28 pmThe Padres take the series, won 2 in a row, and have won 14 of their last 17 games. They are 1/2 game bauck of the Dodgers. The Padres, who have a day off tomorrow can be in a first place tie with Dodgers, who play on Monday at Coors field.
King was outstanding and the BP was solid. Hart did struggle a bit. Miller is one inning away from tying Cla Meredith for consecutive scoreless innings.
Next, the Padres head to Coors field with Vasquez opening the series.
GO PADRES!
