The Padres had opportunities and could not get it done.

Let's win game 2.

GO PADRES!

Everyone pursing the LAD/SD for a Wild Card slot lost ... so that is good.

In the loss column SD is tied with LAD (for NL West) and tied with the CUBS for the 1st Wild Card slot (and home field advantage in round one of the playoffs). Mets continue to slide an are now 5 games behind SD and the only real pursuer for a WC is CINN six games behind SD.

Padres are one game behind PHIL for a bye in round one if they win the NL West.

So tight races all around and we should keep an eye on PHIL and CUBS ... hoping they lose more than the Padres down the stretch to maximize playoff positioning ... beyond just routing for the LAD to always lose.

Top half of the order failed again.  Have to get those first 4 guys going against LA or we're looking to get swept - need to put the pressure on their SP's to get to their bullpen earlier.  Hernandez hit a good pitch off Estrada but overall it was a good clean game with each team only getting 4 hits.  Shildt shrewdly didn't use Morejon, Adam or Suarez so we should be in good shape if Cease gives us a strong 6 but, again, got to get those bats going.  GO PADRES!

Vasquez optioned to EP

Marinaccio recalled.

Extra arm in the pen during this important stretch. Guessing the next time yesterday's starting slot come up ... should see either Sears or Hart getting the spot start (unless fully committed to a bullpen day).

On the positive side ... in the past 30 days the Padres have the 2nd best record in the NL (behind MILW). They are 1st in ERA (without King or Darvish helping much). Offensively they are 2nd in BA, 2nd in OBP, and 6th in SLG. The one sore spot is that they are 13th in HR. On the other hand the hot hitting Laureano, Fermin, and even O'Hearn have been here for only about half the span ... so hopefully better in the next 30 days.

Sure teams (and players) can turn form hot to cold on a dime for no reason ... but the Padres are hitting on all cylinders ... all the offensive players except O'Hearn, Sheets, and Diaz are above 100 wRC+. That should keep them in good status for the next 6 weeks.

Game 2 Lineup
1. Tatis RF
2. Arraez 1B
3. Machado 3B
4. Merrill CF
5. Bogaerts SS
6. Laureano LF
7. Cronenworth 2B
8. Iglesias DH
9  Fermin C

Cease P

I sure hope King is ready for the post season as there is NO way Cease can see the mound! I'd rather use Vasquez.

Pivetta, Darvish, King and the 4 Horsemen.

My worse fear is getting to the playoffs and having no other option but Cease in a pivotal or a winner take all game.

What an absolutely brutal start.

Cease was horrible. He could not find the plate. He should have been traded, not Bergert.

Three Padres players caught stealing in the first two innings is no excuse. Merrill's 2-run error is is his forst error of the season. That is pretty good that he had only 1 error this season, Unfortunately, it came as the worst possble time.

The Padres look bad tonight.

They need to get it together and take game 3 to prevent the sweep.

GO PADRES!
