San Diego Padres at Detroit Tigers: April 21-23

I just don't understand how every other team in MLB didn't make a run at Nick Pivetta...I mean are you kidding me...he is pitching like top of the rotation stuff and AJ got him for literally pennies on the dollar this season. I know his money kicks in next season but man oh man has he been nothing short of stellar...check this out

5 Games Started  4 wins-1 loss  30 Innings Pitched   30 Strike Outs  7 Walks  4 runs total in 5 games .155 batting Avg   .77 Whip

I know it's very early but AJ literally stole Pivetta late and now everybody is looking for pitching...my vote for GM of the year seeing something that nobody else did and having the cajones to present Pivetta this type of contract.

Pivetta has looked like an ace and today was just another example of that...enjoy the ride

It will be interesting to see how Hart pitches today.  When he throws strikes and pitches ahead in the count (as with all pitchers, see Nick Pivetta this season for example) it sets up his off-speed stuff, especially the sweeper. In his poor starts, he has nibbled too much and pitched from behind in the count.  We don't need him to be Pivetta dominant, be we do need him to eat innings and consistently keep us in games.  Go Kyle and the rest of the Pads!

A win today will split the road trip.

Both Padres and Mets share the best record in MLB and both are playing this morning.

Padres NEED to get Merrill, Cronenworth, and Arraez off the IL ASAP. Missing three quality LHH makes the team very venerable to RHP.

Today's line-up basically was:

3 AAA OF in Ornelas, Wade, and Gonzalas

2 retirees in Maldonado and Iglesias

1 reclamation project in Sheets

Tatis, Machado, and Bogaerts cannot carry the team game after game (and they are not). Tomorrow, Monday, and next Thursday off days should minimize the games until players return.

Understandably we want all the 5 SP pitch like Pivetta, King, and Cease (at least the 2024 version) but realistically getting a #4 and #5 of that quality is a rarity in MLB.

It is about wining enough games to make the playoffs and if the Top 3 pitch to their potential that should have the team winning over .500 in their starts. So, what should we look for (at a minimum) for #4 and #5 ... pitching well enough for the team to go .500 in their games.

Will not expect them to go 3 runs / 6 innings every start BUT if they pitch to that level (or better) in more than half, even if blown out is other games ... that should be fine IF the offense is there.

Still early in the season but so far Vasquez and Hart meet that criteria. Not sure this will last but Darvish coming back will likely bump the weakest link.

For now, it is the offense to worry about.

The Padres suffer their first road series loss of the season going 2 and 4.

Aside from the 2 solo home runs, Hart looked good. I don't know why he was taken out after 4.1 innings. He only had a 70 pitch count. The BP did not hold up.

The offense did not get it done and why put in Joe for Machado? Iglesias is the only one that got hits going 2 for 3.

The Padres head home where they have played better. Let's hope they continue that. The Rays are 0-4 on the road so far.

GO PADRES!

Agree, this lineup is way to shallow without those 3 in the line up. Way to easy to get through. Especially since Bogaerts is not much better than average and Machado has yet to heat up, power wise.

So far, we are showing that we are not a good road team which has not been an issue the last few seasons. So hopefully this turns around as weather across the country warms up. Hopefully we are just a bad, cold weather team!?!

The Padres have scored 36 runs in 12 games on the road and scored 67 runs in 13 games at home. Quite a significant diefference.

The Padres drop to the 2nd best record in MLB with a Mets win. The Padres will not play the Mets for the first time until July at Petco Park.

I don't know of any team, EVER, losing 3 All Stars from their lineup and continuing to win.

We should expect more when our guys return next week🤙🏽
