San Diego Padres at Chicago Cubs: June 29-July 1

Is it even possible to be any worse with runners on base?

Well this series completely sucked….but on the bright side we now get to go to Chavez Ravine for four.

I understand (but don't necessarily like) the call of a ground rule double on France hit that got by Crow-Armstrong since it got trapped in the ivy.

What I don't understand is the double that Manny got before that. Ball over the fielder's head ... hits the wall ... bounces off hits the fielder in the head ... rolls back on the field. Should be in play ... no? Manny cruised into 2B suggesting that an ump called a ground rule double and no one objected. Did I miss something?

It has been a season long battle in my mind between being optimistic and pessimistic as the Padres remained in playoff contention ... somehow.

Today just canceled the optimist in me now in the 2nd half of the season.

The optimist believed the underperforming offense would return to the mean (they are not) ... RP would continue to be dominant (they are not) ... SP would at least be "average" (they are not).

Padres were 4 games under .500 in June (been losing ground steadily since early in the season) ... losing today dropping them to 1 game over .500 but heading into 4 games in LA against the #1 team in the LAD and followed by 4 against AZ who are virtually tied with SD now (may be ahead by next Monday). Not really confident in the set against TOR coming after.

Hard to see them hitting the All-Star break over .500 and a very good chance they will have multiple teams between them and a playoff slot.

Gut check for Preller (and the owners) on how to move during the break. Can't see any add(s) covering all the problems.

Pessimist wins.

Wow. This looks like a football score.  Swept and embarrassing.

Buehler had been pitching so well and today he collapsed giving up 9 runs. What happened.

The Padres may end up 20 games behind and may even be on the cellar by the end of this season. This is the total opposite of last season. Maybe Stammen and the coaching staff may be responsible.

Padres may end up selling. But I want to keep, at least Tatis, Taylor, France, Andujar an Merrill. Machado is up in the air. Does he have a NTC?

We keep Pivetta, Musgrove, King, Matsui, Peralta Morejon, Adam and Miller. Maybe Buehler.

In April the Padres were 11 games over .500 but to put the season in perspective they were below .500 in Mar (-3), May (-2), Jun (-4), and now Jul (-1). There is a consistency there of losing except for a short early season run ... expect that to continue.

Offense was the worst in MLB ... is better but better in not good ... Jun still in the bottom 1/3 of MLB. Meanwhile the pitching was carrying the team with a top 5 ERA ... that has now dropped them closer to 10th. SP ERA in June was 14th in the NL (only better than COLO) ... can't see 5 SP suddenly become playoff quality.

=========================================================

Since BEFORE the season I had the Padres an easy playoff team (expect so did Preller) because of 2025 above average performance by the presumed offensive starters plus a SP staff of Pivetta, Musgrove, King, Vasquez, and just one of the FA. Based on their past ... good SP. Pen was thought as elite in the ML.

Can't explain the total meltdown of the core and who would have expected Pivetta to go down and most expected Musgrove (after missing all of 2025) to return, plus King would still be a plus and Vasquez would be "average" as in 2025. Basically in February they had a roster (based on history) that would be fine ... hard to project everything would collapse.

It just is a one of those unexpected seasons.

IF they go into sell mode, keep in mind that selling the FA to be may have some value ... Morejon and Adam should have some buyers ... maybe France or Andujar ... maybe even Buehler. Doubt any takers on Canning, Giolito, Marquez. Gone after the season so deal if you can.

Another sub-set are the players with opt outs after the season ... since everyone needs pitching could find takers for King, Matsui, or Peralta. Pivetta will not be back soon enough to generate any interest. Might lose them anyway or might stay at a price above their value ... all tough calls.

As I recall, Machado - Merrill - Tatis - Bogaerts - Cronenworth all have no trade clauses (full or partial) but other than Tatis ... not sure anyone would want to take their contracts and give any kind of return.

Then the big ticket trade chip ... Miller could move on from a team that really does not need a top line closer (rarely used) since can't get to the 9th with a lead.

Last two weeks of July will be awash with rumors ... and likely deals.

Dont be so quick to count out buyers for Pivetta, I believe that last season TOR traded for Bieber while on the IL with hopes that he would be ready for September and October.

Not saying he would fetch a high price, but could get a low level prospect and the salary relief.
