San Diego Padres at Boston Red Sox: April 3-6
Quote from ultratvfan on April 4, 2026, 4:10 pmThe Padres beat the Red Sox. Despite giving up 7 hits Vasquez was outstanding. He is looking great this season so far.
Miller was one of AJP's best pickups last season.
Tomorrow, Buehler is on the mound. I hope this time he is better than his last outing.
GO PADRES!

Quote from fenn68 on April 5, 2026, 11:45 amBad outing by Buehler ... poor command with only 32K out of 61 pitches ... result lasted only 2.2 innings yielding 4 runs. Tie that with his first start when he only went 4 innings yielding 3 ER ... and that is taxing the bullpen early.
Keep in mind Marquez only lasted 3 innings yielding 4 runs. Having two starters that cannot go 5+ is is problem.
Both were long shot adds ... both have not impressed ... might motivate the Padres to call on Waldron sooner than later even if not "good" may just provide more innings to save the pen for the other starters.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on April 5, 2026, 3:14 pmGlad that the weather cooperated and I got to see an entertaining game with the good guys coming out on top. As far as the pitching is concerned I think I'm on the same page as Fenn. I would consider swapping Buehler out with Waldron or possibly putting Hart in the rotation and activating Adam or adding another reliever. I doubt Buehler would be claimed. If he wants to stick around he can try to figure it out in the minors.

Technical question (don't know the answer) but a FA signed over the winter cannot be traded without his permission until June 15 ... so, does a team have to just release him if they want to drop him before June 15 and not have him go through waivers since, in a sense, being claimed by another team is basically a trade from the player's perspective?
Once released, and his only option is another minor league deal ... fair chance he tries a different organization ... maybe a better AAA locale to pitch or a better path back to the ML. On the other hand, sticking with the coaching staff that has just altered your approach might lead him to stick with the Padres organization. On the third hand, maybe the Padres just will want to move on.
In the race to who gets dropped first ... Marquez's second start tomorrow is the next marker. At this stage?

Glad the weather held out for you at the game, and that you got to see the Padres win. Hope you enjoyed Fenway.

I think they would still just use the standard DFA procedures to drop any of the minor league free agent signings. I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like there have been a few guys let go by other teams that have followed the regular practice already. I don't think anyone would be likely to trade for or even claim the likes of Buehler or Marquez at this point. I would think they would both likely go unclaimed and have to decide whether they would prefer to elect free agency or head to El Paso.
