San Diego Padres at Boston Red Sox: April 3-6

Page 1 of 2Next

2-4    1-5

Friday, April 3 - 11:10am
RHP Michael King(0-0, 0.00 ERA, 6 K, .223 BAA) vs RHP Sonny Gray(0-0, 6.75 ERA, 5 K, .316 BAA)

Saturday, April 4 - 1:10pm
RHP Randy Vásquez(1-0, 0.00 ERA, 8 K, .261 BAA) vs LHP Connelly Early(0-0, 1.69 ERA, 6 K, .263 BAA)

Sunday, April 5 - 10:35am
RHP Walker Buehler(0-1, 6.75 ERA, 3 K, .313 BAA) vs LHP Ranger Suarez(0-1, 8.31 ERA, 3 K, .368 BAA)

The Padres are coming off a homestand that could have been worse. They could have been 4 games below .500 instead of 2. They head east on their first road trip of the season to play the Red Sox and then the Pirates. Last season, the Padres won 2 of 3 at home and in 2024 win 2 of 3 in Boston. The Red Sox are struggling like the Padres.

Both King and Vásquez were solid against the Tigers despite King not getting any run support. If they give another solid performance, the Padres could take at least 2 of 3. Buehler did not look good against the Giants and hope he is better this time around.

Gray is struggling, Early will be the toughest pitcher of the three, and the Padres always have a tough time with Suarez, despite struggling and giving up 4 runs in his first performance of the season.

This is the upcoming first full month schedule for April: at Boston, at Pirates, vs Rockiesvs Mariners, at Angels, at Rockies, at Dbacks(in Mexico City), vs Cubs.

NL West Matchups
Dodgers(4-2) at Nationals(3-3)
Mets(3-3) at Giants(2-4)
Braves(4-2) at Diamondbacks(3-3)
Phillies(3-3) at Rockies(2-4)

GO PADRES!

Going to be visiting some friends in the area. I'll be at the game on Sunday. Hopefully the weather will cooperate. There's rain in the forecast at the moment.

First game at Fenway? It's an awesome place. One of my favorites in my journeys so far.

Enjoy, hoping for good weather.

Yep. I'm excited to check it out. Seeing the forecast makes me appreciate what we've got in San Diego though. Between the Murph and Petco I've probably been to a few hundred games and never once worried about a cancellation. I think I've been to about 15 games in other stadiums and I've had 1 cancellation and a couple of significant delays.

Big swing from Campy. Hopefully that helps get him going.

Disappointing game. Let's take game 2.

Other than Laureano ... all of the other 8 core offensive starters are really struggling. Machado has zero HR / zero RBI ... not ideal for a middle of the order bat. No punch from Tatis or Merrill. Those three are considered the main offensive ... will not win without them. Only Laureano has an above average (.730) OPS.

Only 7 games I guess.

Another different line-up today ... that is 8 different in 8 games.

Last season did not like Shildt's not adjusting the line-up (think Arraez batting 2nd) but that was after an extended period ... then keep in mind they did win 90 games and make the playoffs.

Stammen seems to have gone the other extreme. Yes, the entire team is not hitting but this is a real small sample size (not sure the line-up structure is an issue). Reacting to every game with a line-up change can't do much for the confidence in the manager's decisions (and player confidence is going to be important in the long run). "Everyone" says don't worry about the lack of hitting ... saying it is a long season and the players will get back to their history. If so, why continually adjust the line-up? Seems either panic or no confidence in his (or his staff's) ability to create a long term line-up.

At the same time his clean-up hitter Machado has zero HR / zero RBI and his lead-off hitter Tatis is hitting barely over .200 ... YET ... he is not messing with them. Seems contradictory ...

Note the Padres are LAST in the ML in runs scored and in OPS (.554) which is  a full .045 behind the 29th team (SF) at .599. So, new line-ups every day does not seem to be igniting the offense ... maybe it is just the hitters?

Contact play worked there👍🏽

Tatis looks clueless.....not promising.

In the race to survive ... France's single off the green monster put him ahead of Castellanos (2 for 12, 0 HR / 0 RBI). France now 1 for 4. Add a good defensive play at 1B ... France should now get some more playing time.

However, the good chance SONG will be optioned after his IL stint ... high K%, low batted ball exit velocity ... needs more AAA time.
