The Padres is coming off their first series win in almost 3 weeks. Now they hit the road for 9 games on the road against the Orioles, Cardinals, and Rangers. Then, come home to face two of the toughest teams in MLB: Braves and Dodgers, who hold an eight game lead over the the second place Padres. The Orioles have lost 4 of their last six games.
Canning is coming off a solid start allowing only 1 run on 3 hits and has allowed no more than 3 runs in 3 starts prior and has a 12.15 ERA in 2 starts on the road. Vasquez is coming off a rough start. But, for some reason he pitches better on the road than at home and has a 1.82 road ERA. Buehler has been pitching better lately. he has a 2.25 ERA in his last 3 starts and a 1.69 ERA in 2 starts in June. But, he has not pitched as well on the road as at home and has 6.23 road ERA. Let's hope he is better than that this time.
Both Taylor and Wagner have been a pleasant surprise and have been hitting well since joining the Padres. I hope they continue hitting. Now, if only Machado and Merrill would start hitting consistently.

Padres Designate Bryce Johnson For Assignment
The Padres have designated outfielder Bryce Johnson for assignment, per a team announcement. Xander Bogaerts is being reinstated from the paternity list. The team’s 40-man roster stands at 39 with the move

Looks as though Taylor, Bowen, and Wagner (all with minor league options) beat out Johnson (no minor league options).
Some additional flexibility / insurance if they choose to add to the roster at some point.

Giving up 3 runs in the 1st off of 2 hits.

Only 3 runs scored ... if the team keeps scoring 4 runs or less they will rack up a major losing record. For the season they are averaging less than 4 runs scored (last in MLB).
Not realistic with this SP (or almost any SP staff) to pitch to a consistent 2-3 ERA. Yes, need to be better but at this point it is still the offense that is the problem.

At least the Dodgers lost. The White Sox beat them 8-2 scoring 7 runs off Roki.

Stepping back from each individual game ... looking at the bigger picture ... not looking promising beyond Tatis' major offensive resurgence recently.
In June the Padres have gone 3-7 (second worst record in ML) ... the pitching was at 4.09 ERA which sounds bad but is the 10th best. So, offense ... .611 OPS is worst in MLB and 3.1 runs per game is second worst.
As a team is the offense improving OPS?: April (.727); May (.616); Jun (.611) ... the answer is no and remains well below the slightly above .700 league average OPS.
Meanwhile the pitching ERA: April (4.16); May (3.59); Jun (4.09) ... pitching was and remains with a better than league average ERA. That is thanks to the RP. From early in the season King and Vasquez have faded (both have been really poor in their two June starts) ... Canning and Giolito have shown little consistency) ... only Buehler is showing some signs of effectiveness with two good June starts.
No hitting with declining pitching is not a winning formula going forward. Yet, as of now, Padres are still in a playoff slot somehow (but a close pursuit pack).
