San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks: June 13-15

PreviousPage 2 of 3Next

Unbelievable!!!

The Padres drop to 3 games back no matter who wins in the Dodgers/ Giants game.

They had this game in the bag and could not close it out. Shildt takes out Vasquez, who gave up only 2 hits after 4.2 IP on Thursday, But leaves Suarez in who could not get it done giving up 5 runs on 5 hits. Shildt left him in too long.

Campusano is 0-18 this season and a rally killer.

I hope Merrill is alright and does not end up on the IL.

They need to take game 3 to prevent the sweep.

GO PADRES!

Well, that was a kick in the nuts.

Suarez absolutely imploded on a day when our $25 millionaires actually came through in the clutch( Nando and Manny, I've given up on Bogaerts).

Yet another productive for Sheets. Best sign for me was in the 7th, against a lefty. Gavin first pitch swinging delivers a shot in the 5.5 gap for a single.

The short comings of this team that we all worried about in ST are now beginning to show:  outside FTJ, MM, and Merrill, we're getting zero production from our line-up( except Sheets), starting pitching is thin, no depth on the bench, and what was supposed to be an experienced defensive bunch is not very good.

Just being a realist here, I think it's time to consider all off season FA'S as trade bait. There is zero value in getting comp picks as 1) it doesn't provide help for 2026, and 2) they're usually wasted on players AJ swaps in 4 or 5 for 1's.

Let's see what kind of value Suarez, Cease, Arraez, King have on the market. Trading any of these guys might just bring back a player or 2 who can contribute in '26. Saves our $$$$ for a possible FA signing.

It makes no sense to me why Shildt replaces a hot hitting Sheets with Wade. Instead he should have had Wade PH for Campusano, who IMO, is a waste of a roster spot.

Can I just say again, why, why, why do ML managers insist on using closers in non-close situations!?!?!

It rarely works out, and usually (as in tonight) blows up in everyone's face!!

Another bad call by Schildt!

I don't know about you guys, but I think Shildt has made a bunch of very questionable decisions handling the BP lately.

He needs to let his starters go as deep as possible.

It bears repeating: SP's are your BEST pitchers! Leave them in as long as possible! No reason guys can't throw over 100+ pitches every 5th day.

Did notice a Darvish sighting today in the dugout. That's got to be a good sign?

Another game where I don't have any problems with anything that Shildt did. Suarez just had a disastrous outing. You could make a case that up by 4 with 3 lefties who hit right handed pitching significantly better due up in the next 4 batters he could have gone with the matchup play with Morejon. With how good Suarez has been this year including in non-save situations and the team scuffling I can understand him turning to him.

I do feel like they have badly mismanaged Campusano this season. He's got nothing left to prove at AAA, but they've just been leaving him to rot on the bench. He looked awful. It was also his first real action in 2 weeks. That's not an easy way to try to breakthrough at the big league level. It's understandable if he's pressing and being overly aggressive at the plate. I said in another thread that I want him to get a run of consistent ABs to see if he can get going. That's still true even after a game like that.

It's also worth remembering what Fenn has been reminding us of. Shildt's teams have generally been better in the 2nd half. We're 38-31. At the same point last year we were 34-35. It's been frustrating lately and we do have some obvious holes. We also have the talent to put together another strong run.

Even after this bad stretch highlighted by poor offense from historically above average hitters ... Padres are still in a Wild Card slot with three fewer losses than the first out of a wild card slot. Way too soon to panic and thinking about becoming "sellers".

On using Suarez ... no real issue with his coming in (not the result) but do find it interesting that in some previous posts there have been complaints that Shildt has not used Suarez in the earlier innings after a RP blew a lead (the "games can be decided early speech), that Shildt did not have Suarez come in for more than 3 outs if the RP blew a lead in the 8th, that Shildt did not use Suarez in a save situation even after he had pitched in 2-3 consecutive games ... if Suarez was used as much as some want he would be totally ineffective by mid-season (if not on the IL).

As for Campusano ... not looking good for him as a Padre for the long term BUT he should be in AAA getting AB (and catching). Don't discount his value  as the 2025 insurance policy for catcher if either Diaz or Maldonado get injured ... Padres have little else ready that can match Campusano's ML production over his career (and would be hard / expensive to land a catcher via trade of any quality at this stage of the season). Even insurance for 2026 when both Maldonado and Diaz (mutual option) can be FA and at this point wishful thinking that Valenzuela (AA) can take the ML catching role. So, Campusano will not generate any trade value now that will help the club, the 40 man roster does not have a problem, so sit him in AAA and see what evolves. Side: this year was the last year he can be optioned, so next ST he makes it or is DFA.

I understand winning now but have to manage the roster to consider a 162 game schedule to make the playoffs ... so need back-up to cover injuries and need to avoid overuse of players early (SP and RP) lest they burn out in Aug - Sep. At this point I would be looking to make strategic adds (even if just on the margin) ... and did hear that Preller has said he is looking for a LF upgrade. Padres do have arms at the ML / AAA level that could be of interest to other teams.

Heyward had a second rehab game in AAA as a DH ... 1 for 4 with 2 Ks.

Now 4Ks in 8 AB. Still still would consider recalling him soon (option Campusano) ... actually MAY have a chance to be more productive in LF than Wade/Lockridge while Campy is providing nothing now. I would go with that gamble (can release him later if continues to fail).

The glimmer of hope comes from Heyward having a "good" 2023 season and had better production in 2024 than in 2025. Don't need much to be an upgrade over Wade/Lockridge.

Now I do expect Preller ... at some point ... will deal for an upgrade BUT he does have to find a team with that upgrade player willing to trade at a "fair price". Finding that other team at this point is a challenge.
