38-29    34-34

Friday, June 13 - 6:40pm, TV: Apple TV+
RHP Stephen Kolek(3-1, 3.00 ERA, 29 K, .239 BAA) vs RHP Ryne Nelson(2-2, 4.60 ERA, 38 K, .207 BAA)

Saturday, June 14 - 4:15pm, TV: FOX
RHP Ryan Bergert(1-0, 1.26 ERA, 8 K, .167 BAA) vs RHP Zac Gallen(4-8, 5.15 ERA, 75 K, .232 BAA)

Sunday, June 15 - 1:10pm, TV: San Diego Cox 83
RHP Nick Pivetta(6-2 3.48 ERA, 79 .219 BAA) vs RHP Merrill Kelly(6-2, 3.18 ERA, 79 K, .199 BAA)

Let's not understimated the Dbacks, they are tougher than their record indicates. They have scored 346 runs(4th in MLB) and 67 more runs than the Padres, who are 20th in runs. They are 3rd in runs HR in MLB and the Padres are 24th. Let's hope the Padres don't get snake bitten.

Naylor(.302 avg) and Ketel(.297 avg, 1.003 OPS) are two of the Dbacks toughest hitters. The pitching, at least the first two games, favor the Padres. Chase Field is a tough place to play.

Both Kolek and Bergert are coming off solid starts, but Pivette is coming off a tough one, although not his worst, being a bit roughed up by the Dodgers. I hope he bounces back.

Machado has been hot in June hitting .378 avg, .408 OBP and .667 SLG. But, only 14 RBI. He needs to improve, as does the rest of the team to hit with RISP. Tatis leads the club with 13 HR and Sheets is 2nd with 11 HR. Merrilh, who has been struggling, hit .347 avg in the Dodger series. Let's hope he is getting hot again.

Sheets has been a surprise this season. He has many hard hit balls, but they keep landing in the opponent's glove. He needs to make an adjustment. He shares the club lead in RBI with Machado with 39, but also leads the club in strike outs with 53. Tatis has 52. Sheets needs to be re-signed. A good pick up by AJP.

Top NL West games: Dodgers(41-28) host Giants(40-29): This will be a good one.

The Padres need  to do well as they have a 4-game series in L.A. after this.

GO PADRES!

Josh Naylor continuing to produce.

We REALLY need Matt Waldron to be productive as well!

I'm not sure what the defensive metrics show but to the naked eye, our D behind the plate is not that great( Maldonado much worse than Diaz)

Do they call good games? I'm just not seeing enough to justify either one of these guys holding their spot in the line-up.

Obviously Salas is still a few years out but what about Valenzuela? 24, decent size, average offensive numbers. What's he like defensively?

So LF, 1B, C, and honestly, SS are all positions in need of upgrades.

Time for Manny, FTJ, and Jackson to put on their red capes and carry this bunch offensively.

Just a quick follow up on C defense...

Not sure if this is a legitimate site but based on its numbers, both our guys are BAD!

The Padres offense played poorly. Since the Padres opened the season 14-3, they have gone 24-27.

The Giants beat the Dodgers. Padres lose no ground and remain 2 games back.

Tomorrow game 2. Bergert vs Gallen.

GO PADRES!

Fangraphs dWAR also has them way down defensively ... for the 59 catchers with at least 50 PA:

#32 Diaz ... #42 Maldonado

Clearly offense does not help with their WAR being #50 Diaz (-0.1) and #53 Maldonado (-0.3).

What the defensive metrics don't measure is how they handle / help manage the pitchers ... that is clearly "judgmental" by Shildt/Niebla but it is what comes up from them when discussing how beneficial both are to the staff.

To that end the Padres pitchers have the 6th best ERA in MLB ... no guess as to how much of that the manager attributes to the catcher / pitcher relationship.

Not sure anyone thought Diaz/Maldonado at this stage of their careers (and recent history) would be much more than they are (limited alternatives ... and they are low cost) and believed the "core 6" hitters would carry the offense.

In the past 30 days the "core 6" have collapsed offensively with only Manny producing offense (only player with a wRC+ above 100). Overall the Padres in those 30 days dropped to a below average wRC+ (97 ... 18th). Tatis and Merrill are running about 25% below average 100 and even further below expectations of well above 100.

At the beginning of the season Padres were built to win based on a strong pitching staff (they achieved that) and the offense of the "core 6" carrying the rest of the offense (few thought that the non-core 6 would produce much but maybe not this badly).

At the start of the season the core 6 was elite and racked up some impressive stats and then collectively slumped ... but considering that start and their ML histories ... have to optimistically believe they will come out of the slumps for a strong 2nd half showing and gain a playoff slot.

Thinking the Padres are not giving up on their roster structure due to a 30 day slump by the core 6 since they are still in a playoff position and Shildt has a history of bring in teams with strong 2nd half finishes. Besides the current alternatives are not really upgrade quality.

Note that Heyward had a rehab start in EP last night ... 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts.

Based on what we saw early in the season ... would consider a release BUT what we have seen out of Campusano, Lockridge, Wade off the bench ... maybe not yet.

Probably Heyward up (if for no other reason a plus plus team guy) and Campy down again (not playing anyway and at least he gets AB in AAA if they need him as a call-up for injury).

Should know the moves soon.
