Pittsburgh Pirates at San Diego Padres: Aug 24-26

With both PHI and AZ losing last night, definitely a frustrating loss. Especially with the pitching performances last night. The lack of fundamentals last night, particularly in extra innings was deplorable.

Game 1 Lineup

1. Tatis RF

2. Cronenworth 2B

3. Machado 3B

4. France 1B

5. Merrill CF

6. Rengifo DH

7. Campusano C

8. Bogaerts SS

9. Harris LF

King P

Once again should pitching and no run support.

King was outstanding and going 7 innings to save the BP.

I blame the lack of offense much more than Miller giving up the HR.

Padres need to win tomorrow.

LET'S GO PADRES!

Hitting has gone asleep again! Over the past week the team went 3-3 with the best ERA/WHIP in MLB ... should have more wins. 2.25 ERA / 0.93 WHIP.

When your #3 hitter (Machado) and your #5 hitter (Merrill) just don't contribute ... a problem that outstanding performances by Tatis and France can't overcome.

Machado went 3 for 22 with only 1 RBI (136/296/136) ... Merrill went 3 for 25 with 3 RBI (two on HR) (120/154/360) and 9 strikeouts (36%). Their two week totals are not much different.

Big game tonight! If there are must wins with 30+games to go, this is it! Cannot get swept by a sub .500 team at home late in August, and think you're good. Especially when you're fighting for the last wild card spot.

I'm sure you guys have noticed too but Manny is missing SO many pitches that in years past, he smokes. He's getting to them but fouling 'em off or popping 'em up. That seems more mechanical to me, than age? And Merrill......jesus.... kid is frustrating! When he swings at strikes, he's pretty lethal. But when he's hacking at s**t no where near the zone, he doesn't stand a chance( who would????) Kid needs to calm down! Speaking of which, when was the last time he had a day off? I'm not saying he's tired but he needs to sit next to the hitting coaches and watch every pitch thrown by every pitcher and see how every batter approaches it. Definitely needs to regroup.

Skenes looked line Skenes last night, and King went pitch for pitch with him. Came down to a battle of bullpens, and unfortunately Miller made an error in pitch selection.

This loss makes Mondays ineptitude look even worse now!

Manny is a tough one to figure out ... struggled at the end of 2025 and, except for July, struggled this year  (May and August particularly bad). So not a short cold spell.

Although his production vs FB is down but not by much (BA: 293 to 269) but against breaking balls (.293 to .146) and off-speed (.204 to .131).

Seems to be pitch recognition is a problem. Why from a seasoned veteran? Don't rule out age.

Perhaps there is an eye surgery in his future?

Morgan called up.

With as many DP's as he's hitting into, I'm sure the "I don't hustle because I'm Manny F**king Machado" thing will start wearing thin on the Faithful.

As his skills erode due to age( which I'm not convinced is happening yet), he's going to have to adapt.
