Great Hitter but once he admitted to gambling on baseball he was NEVER going to get into the HOF.

Quote from MrPadre19 on October 1, 2024, 7:33 amIt was a "lifetime" ban.....so we'll see.
IMO he gets it at some point but my guess is it will be a few years.
Sports gambling is everywhere now...I realize it's different when you're a player/coach and you bet on baseball but as it becomes more and more normal his ban will make less and less sense.

Sure although If your didn't do It while he was still alive, why do It now or in a few years, unless he was told, after you pass away you will get in at some point.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on October 1, 2024, 10:35 amI'm not old enough to have seen him play. I only know him for his post playing career. He always came across as a smug asshole to me. It seems like the league just wanted him to take some accountability and show some contrition. Attempts were made to bring him back into the fold and he threw them away. I don't think anyone should feel sorry for him. Plus the gambling isn't even the most troubling thing about him to me. At worst he committed statutory rape. At best he had a relationship with a 16 year old while he was in his 30s and married with children. He's also had some very clearly misogynistic moments over the years. I know that it often does, but being talented on the field shouldn't overwrite doing horrible things off of it.

He was a tremendous ballplayer. All he cared about was winning and he never ever slacked off.Off the field issues matter of course, but I can guarantee you there are players in who did worse.Maybe if you saw him play you'd feel different....maybe not.
But I'm guessing the majority of those who watched him play would say what they saw was a Hall of Fame baseball player.
Played over 500 games at 5 different positions...which is crazy.
I'm not making excuses for the off field person he was.....just referring to the ballplayer.

Well, it was a "lifetime" ban.
That's why they didn't while alive and "may" now that he's not.
Basically they made sure he'd never get to know or be able to say he was a Hall of Famer.
It won't be this year or next...but I think it will happen.Unlike steroid users his transgressions did not contribute to his stats on the field.
I think public groundswell will build and build every year.

Quote from 3fingersplit on October 1, 2024, 12:22 pmDon't confuse "Lifetime" ban, which was a news term with "Permanent" ineligibility, which is what the rule says.
Rule 21 D,2
He will NEVER get into the HOF and I'm okay with that...you don't gamble on baseball if you are involved with baseball. Kennesaw Mountain Landis made that very clear in the "Black Sox" scandal
