So we can just release Hader and it won’t cost us anything beyond this season correct?

Other than all the players we sent to Milw. that is?

Baseball Reference shows the following Padres as Arbitration cases for 2023...

Juan Soto...no Brainerd

Josh Hader ... cant see us going to arb here

Pierce Johnson .. ??

Gallagher ..??

Alfaro..??

Tim Hill ..??

Adams..??

https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/SDP/san-diego-padres-salaries-and-contracts.shtml

Roster Resource has Johnson as a FA after this season … ML service will be less than 6 years but maybe the rules are different if a FA player is signed to a contract that ends earlier.

Soto sure … and almost a slam dunk is Hill with a low salary expectation for his production. Probably Gallagher … cheap for catcher insurance through the winter (but he has no more minor league options for 2023) and likley will be DFA next ST, so a toss up depending on the 40 man pressure.

Adams probably not given his age and injury history even though he will be relatively cheap.

Hader and Alfaro will be the interesting calls. In his last ARB Alfaro may get about $4MM and his second half has been poor which would suggest a non-tender IF they were willing to go with Campusano (guessing Gallagher / Sullivan are pure insurance).

Then Hader is the elephant in the room if he continues to struggle through the season. He is already making $11MM and the arbitration will look at his full body of work for the past few years and will given him more than $11MM. That is hard to swallow for what we are seeing. Keeping in mind Padres would only play about 25% if they DFA him in ST but still a cost and unlikely they will fined a taker at that price point. Cut the loss and non-tender him? Or roll the dice on one of the best closers over the past few years regaining form? $11MM+ is a big gamble when that $11MM+ could be used to fill other holes (and rely on Pomeranz / Castillo / Suarez to be their closer)

Easy choice for me...use that $11-$13 mil towards signing Bell or another 1b or LF middle of the order bat.

Would you rather lock up Bell for 3-4 years or take a chance on Hader for one?

I realize it will take more than $11 for Bell...but that would be the majority of it.

Combine non-tender savings for Hader and Alfaro and more than enough to sign Bell … probably a good choice. Or a SP to replace one of Clevinger and Manaea.

Speaking of Sean Manaea... his road ERA 5.68 is the worst in baseball (SP)... He is due to start vs Gons @ LAD... We have Thursday off so can easily skip his road start and Clevinger can go SAT on regular rest.. with Musgrove on Sun... or we can keep it the same Manaea and Clev Sat and Sun ..BUT Sean history at LAD Stadium for his career and this years struggles on the road seems like we just handing LAD a W and we taking a Loss ... LAD struggles with lefties (but not vs Manaea) why not go with the rookie Groome if not moving the starters up one day.. Its a Sprint and we got to give us a chance to Win EVERY game.. Manaea skipping a roadie and pitching at Petco (decent 4.10 ERA) makes too much sense

Make Groome the SEP pitcher call up?

Yup...I WOULD

Groome biggest issue is he got too fat.. so endurance a thing...but as a lefty if we limit him to 3-5 IP as a piggy back or Martinez type SP..and maybe bring him in for an inning or 2 on his BP day. A la early June Mattinez role.. his velo will play up and he has been downright at times in his (Pro Ball/Minors) career

I mean 33 games left..we can't afford to pitch Hader at all and Sean on the road to be 100% honest..Sean has 6-7 starts left ..no way I take that chance.. IL Hader ..Castillo up.. +1 spot on 9/1 bring up Groome.. can still play taxi squad if need be with Khner also could move Scott to 60 IL and use extra 40 to being up Beatty.. could at least play match up/platoon splits with Drury/Beaty a bit

Then lay a path foward in the offseason workouts for Groome to lose 20+ lbs (scouts I've talked to think +2mph if in better shape) and that Groome is like 11k/9 whereas this Groome 260+lbs is more like 9/9..

Gonsolin just put on the il.

Still,no matter who they throw I don’t like our chances with Manaea right now.

Yeah the thing with Gos and Anderson types is they aren't used to eating innings and wear down.. I think this has been the one big reason LAD can't win a 162 game WS  they just out of gas by post season..every yr.. and why I think we got a shot..Clev low IP..Snell ditto..and even Yu and Mus workload low cause of 6 starters 1st half ...really 1st 100 games ..
