If Baumann clears waivers does he go to the minors ?
Hosmer is likely about to become a father for the second time this year or a family member has a health issue.
I see no reason why they would release Baumann if he clears. As others noted though, can't see him slipping through.

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 24, 2018, 7:13 pmAm I the only one who considers it cruel and unusual punishment to give a prospect their major league debut in Coors against this lineup?
I know I know.
It’s the major leagues and every game is difficult at this level yadda yadda yadda.
But this is just wrong.

Will Andy give one of his starts to Erlin sooner rather than later? That would give us 3 lefties in the rotation( Lauer, Lucchesi, Erlin)
A lot longer than most would like is my guess. If the Padres have been after him for a few years because of what they see in his stuff ... and have no illusions of making the playoffs .... they just keep working him to master his stuff. On the broadcast yesterday they comment that his first inning seems to be consistently bad ... then pitches well for the next few (sort of what happened yesterday).
I could see Erlin stepping in when the next SP goes down with an injury or Ross gets traded ... personally from what I remember from pre-TJ time with Erlin would not expect much more than what we see in Mitchell.
4 counting Richards. Not what I was hoping for from Lauer. I think he will get at least a couple more starts to gage his progress

🙂
I made reference to that very thing in my original post....hope it doesn't blow his psyche to bits
I doubt it will but I agree.....what a terrible place to start a career where baseball scores end up looking like a beer league softball game score....you know what they say....what doesn't kill you can only make you stronger
I think Lauer will be fine but man does he look young 🙂

Oops! I missed Clayton! Good call 84.

It's not just the Coors effect but facing LeMaheau,Blackmon,Arenado and Story as your first major league hitters is down right cruel.
Lol
2 batting champs and a future Hall of Famer and a 30+ hr SS right out of the gate.
I guess you could say it's "all down hill from here".

If Baumann clears waivers does he go to the minors ?
Baumann doesn't have enough service time to decline the assignment, so yes, he'll go to El Paso if he goes unclaimed.
The decision to leave Strahm in the bullpen undoubtedly plays a role in being okay exposing Baumann to waivers. With Webb and McGrath already there to ride the shuttle as LHRP, it's a gamble worth taking at this point.

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 25, 2018, 2:49 pm7 hits and 1 run in almost a full 2 games in Coors Field?
ugh!
And next we get the Mets and “that” pitching staff?
On a side note.....when Villanueva comes back we really need to just DFA Headley and move on.
It’s bad enough we have Hedges and Margot still “on the interstate”.....but Headley is still in the “school zone”.

I guess he would get claimed .... everyone wants LHRP with minor league options (can be optioned again in 2019) and five control years as insurance. A chance more than one team claims him and Preller can work out a PTNL deal.
Technical question ... although Baumann does not have enough major league time to decline a minor league assignment does the fact that he has enough time to be a 6 year minor league FA (I think) give him the right to declare free agency in this situation? If so, his agent may be calling around to place him in a different organization with a better chance of returning to the ML roster at some point. He is 30, so hanging around the Padres organization behind Hand, Erlin, Strahm, Webb, McGrath, and coming soon Castillo and Wieck ... all LHRP ... may not be a desirable option. Of course, given that situation they may just not want to keep him.

Quote from David Jay on April 26, 2018, 6:05 amHe cannot declare free agency until the offseason.
If he is outrighted, then at a subsequent point he was added back to the 40-man, he'd have more choices should the Padres (or any other club) DFA him a second time. That's the situation Jace Peterson found himself in recently.
