Padres vs Rockies Game Thread

Page 1 of 3Next

So the Padres return to Colorado for a 3 game series and MLB-NBC is showing that the probable starters for this visit to Colorado is

Bryan Michell - Hopefully he will just trust his stuff and go after hitters because we all know that walks will kill you anytime but they seem to really bite you in the butt in Colorado

Eric Lauer - I thought this start might go to Robby Erlin but if Lauer comes up and gets the start I hope that Coors Field doesn't damage his psyche

Tyson Ross - He threw a great game the other night and flirted with a no-no but also threw more pitches in that start then anytime in his career I think....would be great to see him follow up his last game with another really strong outing

The hitting as been up and down and it would be nice to see if playing in that huge park helps these guys get on track with the sticks and maybe both teams will just play baseball and not let that last series of events ( hit batters on both teams ) show it's ugly head.

It would be nice to see them string together some wins before coming home to start up against the Mets in a short 3 gamer before heading to San Francisco

Go Pads !!

Mitchell is driving me crazy!

Stake him to a four run lead and it isn’t enough.

Either he’s all over the place or he grooves it right down the middle.

How long a leash does Mitchell get? Other than one outing, he's been pretty horrible.

Will Andy give one of his starts to Erlin sooner rather than later? That would give us 3 lefties in the rotation( Lauer, Lucchesi, Erlin)

A lot longer than most would like is my guess. If the Padres have been after him for a few years because of what they see in his stuff ... and have no illusions of making the playoffs .... they just keep working him to master his stuff. On the broadcast yesterday they comment that his first inning seems to be consistently bad ... then pitches well for the next few (sort of what happened yesterday).

I could see Erlin stepping in when the next SP goes down with an injury or Ross gets traded ... personally from what I remember from pre-TJ time with Erlin would not expect much more than what we see in Mitchell.

When the activate Lauer for tonight's start ... guesses on who is optioned / DL / DFA? (who they would not not who they should) ... a lot of options.

Sure looks like AJ missed on this one....Mitchell and Headley and 13 million plus and really getting nothing out of it

Mitchell I can see MAYBE hanging around in some capacity until he gets it figured out....does he have any options to be sent down to work on his game ?

Headley is just rotting away on the bench and taking up a roster spot....how long does AJ keep him on the roster or do you think he is trying to move him for ???

This team has shown flashes of being competitive and I will admit that my opinion of Franchy was wrong....he does have some crazy power and if he gets more AB's at the big league level hopefully he can adjust his hitting approach to cut down on the strike outs

It's actually a good problem to have with Margot, Cordero, Meyers, Renfro and Pirela all able to play OF and then throw in Spangy and Szczur off the bench....

Last thing.....I have my fingers crossed that the moment isn't to big for Lauer today as it would be awesome to see him have a good debut to go along with Lucchesi as rookie pitchers in this rotation

Go Pads !!!!

My guess is that Headley has an injury but his "injury" could be to buy time to make a move with him....I get the feeling the Pads will be eating a lot if not all of his salary if he does get moved

Another could be Szczur or Spangy depending on options left....I doubt they would try to get either one through waivers and run the risk of losing them....so I just looked up the option status of players on the Padres ( Thanks to Fenn68 for the link )

Szczur and Mitchell don't have any options left but Spangenberg does

Here's our answer per Acee:

Eric Hosmer placed on the Family Medical Leave List.

Eric Lauer added to 25-man roster.

Buddy Baumann designated for assignment.

What happened to Hosmer ?

If Baumann clears waivers does he go to the minors ?

Mitchell has a pretty long leash to figure things out. The stuff is real. If he figures out how to be consistent from the 1st pitch, he could be a solid option in the rotation while the rest of the prospects mature and graduate.

Either way, though, I still appreciate AJ rolling the dice on this guy. That $13m wasn't going to be used for anything else, so why not take a shot at adding another arm to the roster? If none of it works out, then so what? It costs us as fans absolutely nothing and doesn't negatively impact the organization long term at all.
