Padres vs Rockies

2. Pham totally loses a fly ball in deep left (drops for a double) .. no run scores ...but more importantly cause a number of extra pitches for Darvish. Note he clear mis read a foul fly a few pitches later that dropped in play

So is the drop on the tough running catch in 6th inning (ruled a 2B, but should have been an E; was right in the middle of his glove) Pham's THIRD bad play in LF... in a 7 inning game?

That is how I see it. On the last one ... for a professional OF that was not a TOUGH running catch ... ran a good distance but it was a normal / natural arm stretch ... not lunging or diving. Bring back Naylor!

WHHEWWW!   Man, sustained slow-mo heart attack the last 30 minutes.  Last out had disaster written all over it.  I'm very grateful for that hang on by fingernails game & series win.  Want to win em all, but I don't care what happens in Game 2 now after that.

1st time all year Melancon gave me a scare. Can't really blame him since he did come in the 8th for 2 outs. Just glad it's over.

No one else here for game 2? Nick Ramirez ???

A double steal in the 7th, gets caught, horrible!!

I'm not up at 3am for us to lose in extras.....ugh.

Pham's horrible day aside, what in the world is wrong with Snell? 8 months ago he was bitching about getting pulled after 6, now he can't get past 4? SOMETHING must be wrong in this guys life. He has too good of stuff to look this frail.

Oh, and Kudos to Caratini for joining Slam Diego!

Apparently Pomeranz wasn't available due to  "Lat Tightness"... sigh.

I know I said I "didn't care" about the last game, but WHAAATTT was Grisham thinking trying to steal 3rd with 2 outs... with Manny batting in 7th (last) inning?!?.   Took the bat out of Machado's hands for a meaningless low % chance at a 90 ft advance?   I get it if there's 1 out, but does anyone have any insight on this, or was that just idiotic on Grisham's part? Gets rid of the force at any base, but MAN that stung.

84 pitches in 4 innings ...21 per innings while only giving up 2 runs (on a HR) just highlights the lack of control of very effective stuff (Had the Ks again).

Saw the note that for pitchers with 20+ innings he has the 2nd highest average pitch per inning at 19.3 (ML average is around 16). He never had good control but usually closer to 17 per and in his 180 inning / Cy Young year around 16 per. Doesn’t sound like a lot but as the game moves on it eats into going that extra inning.

What can they do to get a 28 year old with a history of poor control leading to being a 5 inning pitcher to start throwing the ball more consistently over (or at least near) the plate ... his “stuff” is hard to hit?

No idea of all the potential causes to lack of control which ones apply to Snell. The analytics guys in the front office have to be pulling apart the pitches used, sequence, delivery, etc to see if the causes are more than random. Although guessing the TB folks went down the same route unsuccessfully.

If it is the body just not listening to the mind to repeat the delivery / release point ... not sure what can be done. Frustrating ... at some point they may just need to tell Snell aim for the center and let his stuff work (or not) ... but more practically if they want to win in 2021 make sure they have a pitching plan to cover the short outing by Snell.

A really bad move by Grisham under any logic and worse with Machado at the plate ... clearly went on his own, Grant and Orsillo almost went silent after the play and clearly were struggling to not be overtly critical but their feelings were clear about the move being .. well ... stupid.
