Padres vs Rangers July 28-30

Page 1 of 3Next

Game 1 Friday July 28th 6:40pm PDT

SD Joe Musgrove vs TEX Dane Dunning

Game 2 Saturday July 29th 5:40pm PDT

SD Yu Darvish vs TEX Martin Perez

Game 3 Sunday July 30th 1:10pm PDT

SD Blake Snell vs TEX Nathan Eovaldi

Texas is a hot race with Houston for the AL West (and a Wild Card position) so should be very motivated.

Eovoldi has been hot as a SP but Dunning and Perez have been off in their recent starts (although Dunning was really good earlier in the season). The Snell / Eovoldi match on Sunday has the making of a real pitcher’s duel … at least for 5 innings. Padres might have a shot at the other two starters in match-ups with Musgrove and Darvish.

Probably the side story should be … who among Snell, Lugo, and Hader will leave town with SD and who will leave town with Texas (who wants the add pitching and has a deep farm system)? When Snell pitches on Sunday … will it be for SD or Texas?

By Sunday night, the fate of a number of players will either be determined or in process of being decided.

I'm not really sure what I'm rooting for in this series.

Surely if we were to trade Snell to Tex it would become effective "after" his start on Sunday.

AJ isn't going to allow Snells' first start to be against us, at home....I wouldn't think.

Probably not … and don’t call me Shirley 😃.

Being the antagonist, If the Padres want to win on Sunday … maybe Snell should start for Texas … go 5 shutout innings and then let the Rangers’ pen lose the game. Padres don’t win a lot when Snell pitches … so ………

Good win yesterday but did not gain on the Wild Card slot ... still 6 games out in the loss column with 54 losses with the last in and the first out at 48 losses plus the second out at 49. Cubs are still 3 ahead of the Padres and the Padres are tied with the METS in the loss column.

Padres need to win but a number of the others need to start chalking up losses.

To than end, over the past 14 games the Padres are just 7-7 ... need to do better than that soon. .500 winning percentage as you would expect is about 15th in MLB for the period.

What is emblematic of the season during that timeframe ...Padres had the 10th best OPS and scored the 7th most runs, that while the pitching delivered the 4th best ERA and allowed the 6th fewest runs (53) ... basically they played to a +18 run differential over 14 games. End result a 7-7 record. If the Padres cannot shake that boom or bust approach to games will not finish the season over .500.

It was a good win, and a bad win at the same time. Sure, beat a playoff caliber team handily last night and set themselves up for two inevitable results.

One, the next two games will barely score any runs and go 1-1 (probably/maybe) and not really gain any ground on the teams ahead. Also why their run differential looks good.

Two, winning two games of three from a playoff caliber team just gives the FO false hope and a reason to waste assets on reinforcing a flawed team, that will end up falling short of the playoffs.

As always, Preller is a mystery as to his plan.

Seems by most reports that he (and Siedler) don't want to be sellers (that does not mean buyer though). At level one they seem to really believe that the returning core for 2024 is a playoff caliber base. At level 2 they are not giving up on 2023 ... long shot to be sure but a chance with this talent.

With that set-up ... really only Snell, Hader, and maybe Lugo as FA become the decision points. With them, would guess any deal would have to deliver a truly compelling return (and likely for impact in 2024). Less than that they hold on them and roll the dice on 2023 playoffs. If that is the decision there ... maybe some fringe adds (probably a batter or two for some "mid-range" prospects. Preller and Siedler likely want to "reward" the fans with running out a competitive team even if a long shot for the playoffs, so trading just to trade and get so-so prospects is not enough to make them sellers.

However, IF (and don't really see this happening in the current market) Preller can find a significant add with multi-year control he just might tap into the better prospects as he did with Soto (not to that extent). More likely that kind of deal will happen over the winter.

Kohlway optioned to EP ... Sullivan recalled

Sounds as though the Padres want Sanchez and Campusano in the line-up at the same time (C/DH) while keeping insurance on the bench for C with Sullivan (LHH)

Eovaldi isn't making the start today. It looks like it will be Cody Bradford who is sort of a lefty swingman.
