Padres vs Mariners September 13-14

A very good professional, play off style win last night, against a play off level team. Great to see.

Hopefully its a bright, sun shining day today in Seattle.

SP goes  8 shutout innings , Hader Ks 3 in the 9th . We now have the blueprint for the rest of the season .

All kidding aside what a game by Yu and Hader looked like the guy we traded for . Today's game wont be any easier with Castillo pitching .

If we get to the promise line (WS) this could easily be our opponent.. Since early June only LAD>... we just beat the AL's best Team.. Lets make it 2 in a row Boyz!

LFGSDP!

Big win. I wanted to see Darvish finish it, but that's what we got Hader for. He looks like he's most of the way back. I don't think we've had a starter throw a complete game this year.

Analytics should say Musgrove/Snell and Clev 2 x through = done.. Yu no problem going 3 -4 times.. his #P's and variations of each make him a different P every AB.. the 1st 3 tend to get hit a lot easier 3rd time around.. just saying with Martinez/Morejon/Garcia/Johnson/Hader

And Hill/Wilson/Stanmen  backing them up.. no need to "expose" them a 3rd time through down the stretch and definetely not in the post season... obviously if Joe is pitching a no no or absolute dominance (like Snell can ) u leave them but keep em on a quick hook..

Well....spotting Castillo 3 runs is not a good way to start.

We’re going up against a top pitcher and leaving 2 runners on base every damn inning.

Come on offense!

What I wouldn’t give for a consistent 5-6 runs a game for a stretch.

Grisham just missed a 3 run Homer (foul) too

Don't understand why Bo Mel left Clev in after hbp hbp... clearly he lost it.. why rest your BP all yr and then manage like this with 20 games to go????

3-0 we had a shot

6-0 odds down to like 0 1%

When we couldn’t score in innings 1-4 with multiple runners on base we were done.

Now we need to win 3 of 4 in Arizona.

This has a bad feel to the remaining games

leaving so many runners on base is a breakdown of approach at the plate….at some point basic fundamentals have to come into play….get em on….get em over….get em in

last night Soto did that with a ground ball in the 9th….nothing fancy but it scored the run

I’m just not seeing it enough….today was just ugly on many levels

the "get em in" has been a problem all season ... Padres have been getting them on and often in scoring position ... but zip in the clutch.

In the impact heart of the order today .... Soto/Machado/Bell ... 1 for 10 with 6K and 2 BB.

Can't complain about Machado since has carried the club this year but Soto / Bell have just not added the offensive impact needed (and expected) from them. In both cases they walk a lot but that is about it. Beginning to miss Voit and Hosmer ... and I was glad when they were moved.

Did hear Mark Sweeney on the radio a couple of days ago and he relied some comments he got for someone with the LAD on Soto. In their opinion they see Soto looking for a walk at this point not looking to hit ... so they just go after him  with 1st pitch strikes and as long as he is not crushing them ... advantage LAD. That is probably the new scouting report on Soto with all teams ... we have seen is BB% going down over the past few weeks while still not hitting.

Maybe he got too in love with getting all those walks, or (as I have speculated) the Padres took him out of the #3 role he had in WASH and moved him to #2 ahead of Machado and that could have pushed him to try to walk more to be on base for Machado ... messed up his approach that he had in WASH? However, that can't explain that when he swings and hits the ball ... zip power / impact as he rotates between pop up and ground ball.

Modern analytics suggest the best hitter be #2 (I suggest there needs to be more judgement on the profile of the specific player). On paper Soto may be the best hitter but in reality right now ... Machado is the best hitter on the Padres. So, shouldn't Machado be in the #2 slot? Can't keep going with Soto at #2 with his current productivity.
