Padres vs Dodgers May 5-7

PreviousPage 3 of 3

I know BoMel won't but lefty or not I'd start Sully at C today.. .786 OPS (20ABs small sample but common on now)

Kim 0-6

Grisham 0-9

Soto 1-16 1HR

That's 1 for 31 vs Urias... Good day to bench Soto 0.63 BA... and Grish?.. let Engel start in CF...Sully in LF... Nola .231 and Manny .360 and Cruz are the 3 padres with some success.. vs Urias.. dont think Carp and Xander have faced him.. Jake has like a .131 BA in 13 ABs I think

Tatis not too much success either..

I'd go

1. Tatis RF

2. Engel CF

3. Manny 3B

4. XANDER SS

5. Cruz DH

6. Nola C

7. Crone 1B

8. Sullivan LF (hot bat vs both LHP and RHP)

9. Kim 2B

This loss is totally on Soto, that was a horrible error in LF today.

Still the bitch….tired of watching this garbage offense.  Different year, same crappy results.  No amount of money spent can overcome systemic hitting issues of this organization.

A couple of general observations;

The Dodgers travel well and it sure seemed that there were a ton a Dodger fans 50/50 and yes there were a few fights in the stands.

The Dodgers have a very different approach hitting...they lay off the breaking stuff and just attack the fastball..they don't take one down the tube...they are swinging....the Padres just watch center cut go by but love waving at a breaking ball away.

The Dodgers play situational baseball...the Padres have no clue what that even means.

Player observations;

Nola could not hit water if he fell off a pier. Nice guy and pitchers love him throwing to him but... opposing runners love him because they know he won't throw anybody out and opposing pitchers love him because he will fail at bat 85% of the time.

I've seen enough of Soto being so predictable...4-3, 3U, 3-1...watched 3rd strike. His outfield play is not even average and if he didn't have a name/reputation from previous years he would be a candidate to be sent down.

Seems like every guy, there are a few exceptions, is only interested in the "BIG" swing. The hitting mechanics of some of these guys is horrific... starts at their feet and goes up and the end result is not good.

Tatis Jr has been a huge plus to have back...great catch today and fast on the bases...his bat is just getting in sync.

There is more I could critique here but I'm sure that will come later and by others.

Prediction;

Manny is on the verge of going on one of his hot spells and that makes everybody else better.

Epilogue

Had a great time at Petco even though our boys dropped two of three to the Dodgers...gotta have a short memory because these two are back at it again starting next Friday for three at Chavez Ravine.

I think the biggest take from the weekend series is, our offense is just not where it should/needs to be. IF you look at this series, the SD pitching staff gave up 2 runs Friday, 2 runs Saturday, and if not for a lucky swing from Busch, 1 yesterday. Without Soto's OF gaff and our poultry offense, yesterdays game never gets to extra innings.

Base line, with the pitching performance this weekend, this should have been a 3 game sweep, with SD going on the road a half a game out of 1st place.

So you're right, Manny gets back on track, and Tatis gets his last little bit of timing down, and the offensive warts should go away soon.

And then we see what this team can really do.

I have no idea why both the Soto blunder and the Betts dropped catch were both scored as doubles?

Especially the one to Betts.

He was turned facing the ball and it went directly in and out of his glove.

He wasn't even on the move still like Soto was on his.

Both should have been errors.

I think the Soto one got reversed to an error.. the Betts one you can argue, sun wall, jump was not as black and white.. guess is the baseball gods getting Xander back a hit he lost with Soto's running the other day..

On a Soto note.. is he broke? I MEAN as a Padre he is OPS .900+ on the ROAD... He is only a .738 OPS guy at Petco though.. (and that's including his Nat games there) for his career

Like Giles .. he gets Petco'd a lot..

Compare

Manny .848 career at Petco

Tatis .908

Xander (smaller sample size) but .838 for his career at Petco

Anyway seems like we got the right 3 locked up.. not sure Soto is our guy, he might be.. but needs to do better at home..period.. in the postseason though (if we don't have homefield) Soto is the type of guy you want on the Road.. even this past playoffs he was a road beast....

Very hard for me to justify the huge $$ he wants.. when Othani for example could be better use of $$ short term..

You can pin this but 💯 guaranteed that if Soto leaves he will be a beast in his new ballpark if it's not Petco/Seattle type of ballpark...

We finished the homestand 5-3 (2 Mexico games were part of our 81 home games).. could have easily been 6-2 7-1 or 8-0 but for the lack of a clutch hit, a clean catch, and a great player tiying up on their last out.. P like this will carry us far..

Also we are currently in possession of the last playoff spot #6 in NL despite not being 100% dialed in.. and having played an absolute brutal 35 games with 6 more to go (Twins/Dodgers) in our scheduele.. after this next 6 we will have relatively a lot easier weeks/Months ahead schedule wise.. and there are signs that our boys are starring to heat up.. we out hit LAD this entire weekend , they outscored us 9 to 8..

Do Better Boyz.. lets hit the road and get 🔥 Hot 🔥
