Quote from Henry Silvestre on September 6, 2022, 1:04 pmCan't have 1/2 of your lineup below .700 OPS and expect consistency on offense at Petco.. I mean 1 guy with H/R splits below .700_above .750 ok.. but 5 and no one after 1 2 3 4.. hitters big problem.. from a consistency point of view..
Crone was over .800 at Petco last yr way over so that one is a ?? Drury .539 ?? PROBABLY THE 2 that could make a big difference as we head to the finish with 18 Hone games left

Quote from BoosterSD on September 6, 2022, 1:05 pmI honestly think I would bat Soto lead off, and Grisham 2nd, with Manny 3rd. For the moment, take advantage of what Soto is giving us right now, which is getting on via the walk. Let Grisham bunt him over, and then Manny comes up with 1 out, and Soto on 2nd. Also prevents a double play, and then should give Bell a chance to drive in Soto with a base hit, depending on what Manny does.
Play a little small ball, and get a run on the board in the first inning, and put a little additional pressure on the visitors pitching and defense.
1. Soto, Grisham, Machado, Bell, Crone, Kim, Alfaro, Profar, Nola/Campusano.
And Fenn/3 Finger, it appears that Campusano is not very good behind the plate. Looks like he has hands of bricks back there. Nothing is caught smoothly.

This is where Melvin is supposed to be worth/making his money. If you are not slugging at home, then you have to do some small ball stuff. Hit and runs, a sacrifice bunt/suicide squeeze, something to get guys across the plate.
It just seems like he is happing with his hands in his pocket waiting for something to happen.

Problem is that if you have seen most of the guys try to bunt or hit and run or go the opposite way when needed … they can’t. These players were not even born the last time that “small ball” worked consistently in MLB … so never taught the mechanics of doing that right.
At this point would just be happy if they swing when the fastball is right down the middle. Not ask much here.

Quote from fenn68 on September 6, 2022, 2:04 pmWith Myers and Drury out/questionable … bit surprised Campusano (as DH) or Rosario at 2B/3B to move Cronenworth / Machado to DH for a game.
I know neither have proven anything at the ML level … but is the Melvin saying that he does not see them a hitters ready for prime time.

We know that Grish can do it though, and that is why it was part of my 1st inning strategy.
Nothing else seems to be working at this point, gotta do something!!

I like your logic..but with Soto slg .513 at Petco and Profar playing well at Petco as well .. why not Profar/Grish/Soto/Manny/Bell.. in essence lengthening the lineup and making 789 more productive ... with Grish and his low OBP (unconventional) but could work... yesterday for example Profar doubles.. Grish could bunt for a base hit towards 3B.. either be safe or out... but then Soto can bring him in by SF.. hit or putting the ball in play to the right side... if he fails then Manny can drive him in with a Hit or BB and let Bell take care of business.. with Soto behind him Grish would also get more FBs to hit and likely add 20-30 or more pts to his BA

Quote from Henry Silvestre on September 6, 2022, 2:40 pmThe other thing between Profar /Grish a d Soto a SP can be worned out as the 3 are likely to see 20+ pitches in inning #1.. if one or more get on then likely SP is at 30+ after inning 1... perfect when facing Max Degroom Kershaw etc in postseason
