With that being said…I get so tired of radio talk show people constantly complaining about this team. I get it that they get paid to talk even though “Annie and Elston “ have no clue how a baseball team works or just how hard it is to play or manage the game.

They just don’t get that a 75% failure rate at the plate is actually how the game works and don’t understand that every team is going to lose 70 games…a few teams will win 100 games and some teams will lose 100 games…it’s baseball. Personally I think that Jackson Merrill is here to stay unless he completely comes unhinged and I don’t see that happening…the Padres are a whole 13-14 games into the season and they will get more consistent for sure.

It is the right move.  Although Merrill loses his buddy and roommate , both he and Pauley know that Pauley needs to get regular at bats to return and stay in the majors.  Sullivan gives an alternative to Higashioka but also can play OF, 1b, dh and even 3b; won't be afraid to pinch hit for Campy when a tough righty is on the mound.

Pauley has a nice power swing and if you remember what he did when he moved to Ft. Wayne from LE last year, you can expect him to do the same thing in the PCL.   Not a true indicator of what he's capable of but at this point he just needs AB's and not adjustments to his swing mechanics or approach.    Give him a month or so at EP and he might be back (or even sooner in Wade begins to fizzle).

If we sort of set Machado’s return to 3B at May 1 … the DH slot is “open” and a LHH would be a benefit to the line-up. So, giving Pauley 3 weeks of regular AB (even in EP) might help the Padres make a call on recalling Pauley to DH (part time 3B) or make the move for Belt or Pham.

On the flip side, if they see Manny as the dominate DH for 2024 … giving Pauley the reps at 3B every day (along with the AB) might evolve into Pauley as the regular 3B going forward. If not maybe a different move.

Three weeks for evaluation of Pauley and Machado before the next move.

Sullivan was hot in EP but probably just a short term fill … mainly because he was on the 40 man roster and avoided the Padres having to make a 40 man roster move to add a non-roster back-up. Add that Higashioka … although very good defensively … is not a hitter (or apparently a hunter) … so maybe we do see the LHH Sullivan catch a bit on Campusano off days.

It’s funny when guys that have played with him all say the same thing…he’s intense but nobody ever says or has said that he is great guy in the clubhouse and “intense “ is code for he’s an asshat so put me in the “Hell No “ column and besides if he is such a get and great team player he would have already been signed by someone.

Pauley will be back sooner than later. Getting AB’s in EP will only make him better in the long run

Just like last season. The team gets a big emotional win. The players and coaches talk about how they can build off of it to get some momentum going. The fans get excited. They come out the next day and lay an egg. They're going to have to show an ability to string some wins together at some point to get where they want to go.
