Padres vs. Cards

Page 1 of 3Next

Listed SP for the Padres:

FRI: Musgrove

SAT: Paddack

SUN: Weathers

I guess they want Weathers back in the rotation and apparently see Paddack as being fully back to the level he does not need a “piggyback” option.

Begs the question where Lamet fits in this plan ... after three consecutive short performances with his stuff not back to pre-injury levels ... is he bound for the pen or a return to the IL? Or are they going to move to a 6 man rotation and a long string of games is coming soon?

None of Paddack, Weathers, Lamet, or Miguel Diaz are close to being greenlighted for 90 pitches in a game right now.

So not reading too much into who is the "Starter".  In this case, Lamet & Diaz will back CP & Weathers; probably 1 each day.

But this is the last week of:  0ff day / 6 games / off day....  Then it's 34 games in 35 days.  Think in a perfect world Tingler would like to go to a true 6-man rotation for all or most of that stretch (assuming relative effectiveness).   But may have to go 5 in the beginning until confident Lamet can really go 75-90 pitches / 5 IP.  Won't be able to carry 4 SP with each only going 2-3 IP during the long stretch of games with no off days... these 4 have to get stretched out.

As has been discussed on this board, if you have a true ace who A) is significantly > your #2 SP, and B) Can handle the Innings, you CAN do a "rolling" 6-man rotation where only your #1 SP starts every 5th day:   1,2,3,4,5,1,6,2,3,4,1,5,6,2,3,1  etc...

It's pretty clear Darvish has become this due to Snell's maddening inefficiency / lack of command, and Musgrove's recent mediocre quality & duration outings.  Until 1 or both of those guys gets rolling, it's risky, but Pads might have to do this to keep pace with SF & LAD.

Doubt the Padres lock into any structured rotation plan given that Darvish is the only one stable and consistent. Probably will be adjusting on the fly based on the the games go.

IF the Padres wanted I could see both Paddack and Weathers go 80+ pitches (assuming they are pitching well) in their next starts. Paddack went 53 in his last outing (a good outing) and has hit 71-95 pitches earlier in the season. Weathers went 54 in his last outing (a good outing) and has outings in April of 79 and 89 pitches. He "only" had dead arm not really an injury and seems fine last out.

Diaz ... for now ... is the more likely long in the pen having only a couple of appearances (50 pitch in one).

Not sure on Lamet ... Sunday (Weather's start) would have been "normal" rest ... but if they bump him to Monday (extra rest) then end up giving Darvish extra rest and Snell 2 extra days. Could set him in the pen ... but given he is the one trying to return from injury (and his stuff is still down) if they want to use him .. would think as a starter with controlled warm-up and a fixed plan to pull him. His efforts of 29-30-29 pitches are not screaming for him to get stretched out quickly. FB down about 3MPH and using the slider less / not as sharp. Maybe they do a Lamet / Diaz piggyback as the 6th starter and push for not needing that arrangement for either Paddack or Weathers.

Yes.  I think this is what they'll do.  But Diaz could "float" &  cover behind any shorter start for a few IP.

I guess if they went 6 starters with Lamet #6 and Snell (the next likely to not go deep) at #3 ... Diaz could be the piggyback for both going with 2 days rest ... decent amount for a multi-inning RP who would be going either 2 or 3 in each appearance.

At least we will miss Flaherty.

If really down the 3 close contact players, we really have our hands full this series.   But I'm cautiously optimistic about our SP's.  Main goal is not to get swept.  Wainwright Game 2 does not bode well for such an inexperienced lineup.  No one but (I'm assuming) Ha-Seong Kim has seen the Card Game 3 LHP Kim.  I'd seriously have Ha-Seong lead off  that day.

That was a sweet double play....Marcano gave Kim a perfect feed and Kim was pretty damn slick getting the back of the bag and throwing a dart to Croney........SWEET !!!

Winning 1 of the next 2 would be great.

Our depth chart looks like an advertisement for Swiss Army Knives right now with all the red crosses!

We just need to get through this home stand without losing ground and hopefully get everyone back on the field.

That game was brutal last night

I finally called it when we went up 5-1.....was close to 2 am.

Glad I missed the “almost” comeback.

Glad we won, but that was one long and boring game.

I'm hoping someone steps up while everyone is out to at least solidify our bench when they're all back. Kim has been incredible defensively. It would be great if someone would step up offensively.
