Really excited to see how Waldron's pitch repitoire holds up every 5th day.

I'm really pulling for the guy.

Anyone else sensing deja vu?

Offense is feast or famine.....

Hopefully ends up more feasts than famines … using a split of under 4 runs per game (about average) vs over (4+) … Padres have 4 OVER vs 3 UNDER … not great but not bad.

Problem is the pitching where opponents are 7 OVER vs 0 UNDER …  Padres yielding an average of nearly 7 runs per game ….

Wonder if the altered ST and the Korean trip just threw off all the arms? Clearly all five SP have struggled. Only seven games in … too early to see a pattern (or a problem) I guess.

Waldrons' Knuckler was knuckling....he was just leaving them belt high right in the swing path.

It doesn't have downward movement....so he's gotta get it down by the knees to be successful.

He didn't

Pitching has really been atrocious. I agree that the odd ST schedule and Korea could have messed with our staff... on the flipside, though, the Dodgers staff has allowed more than 4 runs only twice in their 7 games. Plus their starters have gone 5 or more innings in 6 of the 7 games.

The Padres' difficulties compared to the Dodgers' relative success is troubling... but hopefully something that will pass.

And not betting he will ... consistently. Was not a proponent of Waldron ... still not ... expect a different #5 SP before then end of April.

"Small sample size" - "every team has hot / cold runs" - "recovering from Korea" - "it a long season" - "it is early" ... so trying to ignore the specifics of the pitching right now after seven games (not easy) and want to see how April plays out.

Of course every game counts whether in April or September ... but at the end of the season no one cares when they got the wins.

I definitely think the Korea trip affected the pitching staff.  This is evidenced by the higher walk rates and hits allowed numbers by the pitchers who are historically low in both of these statistics.  This should work itself out for the top 4 SP, but I still think Waldron is better suited to a long relief/change of pace role than as a SP.  This could be Brito or Vasquez (he'll open the home season in El Paso today (yikes!) or even Morejon, if they can stretch him out a little bit more - I really don't see Avila in the #5 role or even on the team despite the kudos Shildt gave him recently.

The RP's have also been affected adversely by inconsistency.  The way Shildt uses the bullpen, we may see some guys optioned (or dropped) to get some fresh arms on the team like Jacob or Estrada; if you option Cosgrove (tired arm?) and drop Avila, you have a pathway for fresh RP arms from El Paso.  So, I think the bullpen & the #5 SP slot are going to be very fluid situations over the course of the season with many bodies going in and out to fill an ongoing need.  The good thing is, a lot of these are going to be very solid no matter when they pitch.  Plus, don't forget some promising arms in San Antonio.

It's a long season, so not panicking yet.  I still think pitching is going to be an overall strength of the 2024 team once the guys find their rhythm and lock into their mechanics.  Once we get our SP throwing 6 innings, it will make a world of difference.

The 5th SP will be most likely be a revolving door … but it is the 5th SP and Padres just need a “do no harm” plugger that can eat innings with a sub-5 ERA. That assumes Musgrove - Darvish - Cease - King will be as advertised. Teams with a plus #5 are ?????

Waldron should get a few more starts … then we could see some shuffling. If the first shuffle is among Avila, Brito, and Vasquez … if Vasquez can survive some starts in EP,, would not be surprised if he is the call-up. Then, after maybe 10 minor league starts (if effective), around June we could see Mazur, Bergert, or even Snelling step in. If none of that is working … trade deadline will deliver a “serviceable” body for #5.
