Quote from BoosterSD on May 23, 2022, 8:12 amAccording to CBS web page, MIL has only played 5 games against teams with a better than .500 record, and they are 2-3 in those games. So this series, same as the one versus the CHC, is a trap series. MIL will want to show how good they are, and that they are worthy of being ranked as one of the better teams in the NL.
SD needs to take care of business and take two of three, no let down like against the Cubs.
Especially while the LADs are in WAS, a not very good team.
Keep it rolling Pads!

Quote from fenn68 on May 23, 2022, 8:43 amThis series should be interesting since MILW and SD ... on paper ... are the same team, consider:
MILW: 26-15 (.614) ... SD: 27-14 (.659) ... teams have been neck and neck for weeks in records
MILW: 238/315/414 ... SD: 233/314/363 ... and consider MILW plays in a hitters ballpark / Division
MILW: 3.46 (ERA)/1.18 (WHIP) ... SD: 3.47 (ERA)/1.14 (WHIP)
MILW: 15 DRS / -0.4 dWAR ... SD 12 DRS / 4.3 dWAR
Now that is a close match after 41 games!

While your stats are valid, you would really have to dive into the opponents that each have played.
What is the record of the teams that SD has played, versus the records of the opponents of MIL.
Like I mentioned in my post, MIL has only played 5 games against teams with a winning record, and have a losing record in those games.
So it sounds like MIL has been beating up on bad teams, while SD has been taking care of business against the toughest division in baseball, the NL West, and other tough teams like ATL and PHI.
So while the stats are similar, perhaps MIL stats are "padded" a bit, while SD may actually be better than they look based on the quality of the opponents faced by SD. Maybe???

Quote from fenn68 on May 23, 2022, 10:16 amWell the Padres are 5-4 vs clubs > .500 ... and 3 came over the weekend in SF. So, 2-4 before that.
Neither team has played a tough schedule. Can over analyze as to where and when the tough games were played and the quality of each of the poor teams when they were played ... but bottom line is that there is not clear separation between the teams ... yet.
Padres are going into a stretch in June that will test them with a long run of games and some of those "better" teams.

Not to mention Padres often get Petco'd and their collective BABIT is pretty bad with so many hard hit balls fallen victim to gloves and highlight reel film ttpe defense against here in the early going . Looks like we got a couple of breaks finally with Voits single in between 3 Giants and Kim's double that barely stayed out of reach and fair despite being in the air forever... I think as a team we are better SP and Overall.. Their BP is better than ours at this moment ...Lets go out and take care of business GO Padres!
