Padres vs Angels July 3-5

PreviousPage 3 of 4Next

Sandoval going for the LAA tonight is hittable recently … a LHP so we might see Dixon in at DH now that Cruz is gone. Lugo for the Padres has been effective so a good match-up for the Padres … although what we see on paper does not always play out in games.

Padres RHH have been hot in Kim, Machado, and Bogaerts … Tatis has been OK … so that helps.

Padres sit now 6 games out of the wild card slot but need a strong winning run since most of the teams ahead of them are not going on losing streaks.

Neck and neck with the NYM … so this weekend series could be very important for the run for the wild card for both teams.

Didn't mention Rendon because his replacement will likely perform better.

Not enough is said about that horrific contract and how it has helped to keep Trout and Ohtani out of the playoffs.

Rendon is making $38 mil this season and for three more seasons.

Yikes.

Yeh, another in a long list of "super stars" signing long big contracts that just turn into bad contracts.

Rendon, Sale, Strasburg ...

What scares me is that we may be looking at our own future when we look at Anaheim…

Always a worry...in Rendons case he was all world his last year with Wash...34 HR's and 126 RBI.

He hasn't had those numbers in the 4 years in LA added together!

Of course he's also not played more than 60 games in a season since either.

For me, the only one that really fits into that category in Bogaerts. With his wrist situation and age, this is the one that I fear that ages the worst. Next might be Machado; however, it doesnt seem that he has a chronic injury like Bogaerts so I am not as concerned with his contract. Tatis is soo young, hard to see this contract aging poorly, unless he pulls something stupid again. And lets hope he has that out of his system. I guess the shoulder could be an issue, but seems fine so far this season......knock on wood!

I agree....it helps that we have the DH now.

As these guys age they can rotate to DH half the time or full time for one if necessary.

I still think, depending on guys like Martorella progressing,Xander ends up at 1b in the next couple years.

UNLESS we trade Merrill that is.

Crone needs to be at 2b.

When both Xander and Manny are 35 I just don't see them playing SS and 3B 150 times a year.

Could see Machado and Bogaerts sharing the 1B/DH slots in the last 5 or so years of their no trade deals. Bogaerts heading there sooner than Machado.

I am more concerned about the length of the deals with Darvish (6 years, also into his 40s) and Cronenworth (another 7 years).

Maybe that should factor in any decisions on long term deals with Soto or Ohtani. Soto is destined to be a DH sooner than later and Ohtani is a DH. Could get quite crowded at the DH slot in 5-6 years or they will field a very shaky defensive unit.

Other than health I’m not so worried about Darvish.

He’s the type of pitcher that could lose 5 mph and still be as effective IMO.

First sweep outside of Mexico City. There's still a lot of ground to makeup, but there were a lot of encouraging signs in the series. Manny and Xander seem to be heating up. Jake had a big series. They had arguably the best showing anyone has had against Ohtani and seemed to show the fight and sense of urgency that has too often been lacking this season. I'm still a little worried about the bullpen while we wait for Wilson and Suarez to get back, but if they can take the series against the Mets and get to the break with a little momentum I'll feel a lot better about their chances than I did just a few days ago.
