Padres vs Angels July 3-5

Worried about Wacha (key to the strong 2023 SP so far) ... especially if you link with the lingering Darvish issue (health and recent ineffectiveness) with getting his starts pushed back.
Have to think Batten is a short term fill (not doing all that well in AAA) ... just don't know who? The open slot created by DFA of Cruz probably clears a spot for Rosario coming off the 60 day IL but he is not a real candidate for the ML club.
Cruz was not doing well ... but still better than Carpenter. Can't see Dixon being a great RHH option and Odor is struggling most of the time as a LHH. Preller has to be working on a DH type add from somewhere.
Looks like the Padres will have to rely on the BIG 5 to hit their way to the All-Star break with all the pitching injuries.

If they didn't have more committed to Carpenter he probably would have been the one to go. I'm not real sad to see Cruz go, but on performance he's been better than Carpenter. If this is the end for Cruz he put together a pretty remarkable career. For a guy who wasn't really a full time player until he was 28 his offensive numbers are pretty impressive.

When was the last time we saw Castillo in SD?
If he's fully recovered and back on form, he'll give us what Pomeranz should have.

Got to hope the best he can return from all those injuries. He last pitched (other than a couple of token appearances) in 2018 in the ML (and he was pretty good). Still only 27.
In EP has had a decent past month or so and over the season had a few really ugly appearances but mostly 1 inning effective.

Note that Trout is going on the IL (6 to 8 weeks) with a broken hamate bone. Got the break on a swing and miss yesterday.
Really a tough break for the LAA (beyond of course Trout) in their quest for a Wild Card slot.

Angels fans have to be reeling right now....and all of us here can relate.
On top of two losses in a row Trout out for a couple months and Ohtani injured.Haven't seen any reports but guessing Ohtani may just miss a start or two.
We "really" need to get Wilson back...what's his status?
Our bullpen has been atrocious the last couple weeks.

This is from Acee's daily newsletter this morning. It highlights just how bad the bullpen has been lately.
Padres relievers have allowed at least three runs in nine straight games. If that sounds like a lot, it is because there has never in the franchise’s 55-year history been another time that the bullpen allowed at least three runs in nine straight games.
Yesterday was the third time in that span that Padres relievers were being asked to cover just two innings. They have allowed 29 earned runs over 33⅔ innings in the nine games.

Expect both Wilson and Suarez to be back after the All-Star break to link up with Hader and Cosgrove for the end of game and set up with Honeywell, Garcia, Hill, and a LHRP out of Morejon, Kerr, or Castillo. With the All-Star rest, the arms get a chance to recover and return to the way they performed in the first 2 1/2 months when they were very effective.
At this point maybe a bit more concerned about Darvish and Wacha since no real alternatives for them as SP.

Add that Rendon was on crutches after fouling a ball off his leg … considering an IL option (no initial report of a break though).
