Padres @ Royals May 31-June 2

Sometimes you get lucky … and no matter what happens for the rest of the season … Preller’s signing of Profar is a huge win.

Profar so far is near the top of NL hitters hitting for average, on-base, and even slugging. This for $1MM plus $1.5MM in incentives based on plate appearances. Always have to add the positive impact he has on the clubhouse is not to be ingnored.

Probably will not stay at this level for the full season but if he just remains reasonably productive … seen a report suggesting he could be in-line for a $14-15MM AAV over 2 or 3 years based on some last year deals … a bit steep for the Padres with the coming ARBs next winter and Kim a FA.

However, do see Preller pushing for a signing on a creative contract and Profar maybe being very flexible in contract size / structure since clearly he likes it here and is successful here.

Profar success seems to be coming from an increased barrel rate, hard hit% and better exit velocity.  Further, his line drive % is up significantly, with both his GB rate and FB rate going down about equally to prop up that line-drive %.  I don't think Profar will want to price himself out of the Padres budget, so it may be a year to year thing (with significant but relatively easy to reach incentives) hoping his production stays at least league average.  Often you see a player at Profars age have  what appears to be a  career year before falling  into a downward spiral to end his career.  For that reason, I would go year to year vice a longer term contract.

In lieu of Mazur, I would recommend Nick Hernandez who is having a very good year in a very tough place to pitch.  Came up for a cup of coffee last year but this year seems to have put it all together.  Not on par with Estrada but better than Kolek and possibly even Brito and de los Santos if given the opportunity.

Nice win today…Vasquez threw well, they hit and got another series win. Now if they could just do that against the Rockies next time they match up 😜

Go Padres!!!

Yet another series win..that’s 8 of last 10.

But let’s get the sweep today.

Winning Series is the goal…but win streaks are better.

I would love to see it happen and then go to Anaheim and beat up a a bad Angels team…then they would have a streak coming back to Petco

  • Well, it didn't happen, this just shows us how important it is to close a blowout game and how a winning team can't afford to have a rule 5 player (pitcher in this case), because of Kolek's bad outing they had to use Suarez on Friday, therefore he wasn't available today, as soon as I saw Matsui in I knew the Royals were coming back, ask my kid, he heard it first 🤷

This is the kind of thing that CANT happen. You can not keep dumping stupid games. It will cost you eventually.

Winning the series is fine, but at some time you have to have the killer instinct and sweep a friggin series.

Ouch…I hope this one doesn’t come back to bite this team in the ass for a playoff spot…not having Estrada and Suarez available definitely hurt the cause today. Matsui is a hold em guy and doesn’t have a MLB closer mentality yet but he will learn from it.

The trick for the team heading into Anaheim is to get over this one and just play clean baseball and don’t play DOWN to the Angels level like this team is prone to do. Gotta take advantage of weak teams on the schedule because those are the ones that are a real gut punch if you don’t.
