Padres @ Phillies July 14-16

That move could be sooner than later with Weathers being called up for a start tomorrow ... expected Jacob to be sent down BUT after today's performance by Garcia it just be a move with him keeping Jacob up for fresh bullpen support in the doubleheader and Sunday.

Either way, can't be too long on a call with Wacha, Suarez and Knehr coming off the IL soon.

The worst part of Garcia's performance was needing to use Hader in a game that should have been an easy blowout ... that may curb his use on SAT (2 games) and SUN ... can't see him going 4 saves in 3 days. That could cost the Padres a game. They used Cosgrove too ... so maybe if they need a LH closer ... Cosgrove gets an opportunity in one game (but held out of another).

Not that it needs to be said, but holy balls, Garcia is an absolute train wreck. We cannot afford to give him a roster spot anymore.

Should note ... Padres did recall Weathers BUT they are allowed to go to 27 players on the day of a doubleheader ... so not offset TODAY ... but tomorrow someone has to dropped from the active roster.

Since they optioned Waldren and Wacha is not ready to return they just might keep Weathers up if they are worried about that 5th SP down the road and make the move with someone else. Might be influenced by how well Weathers looks in game #2 today. Same for Jacob.

I guess they have to be. frustrated with Garcia and are calculating a plus / minus on his future

  1. looking at his 2021 / 2022 ... for a set-up man his performance was good ... he has the plus pitches ... but his command is gone (but that can snap back at any time).
  2. the "next up" given the current injuries, is no lock on being better ... we may want to believe anyone would be better but that is more wishful thinking at this point (could be but an unknown).  None of the 40 man RP not on the 26 man have shown well in the ML and are not burning up AAA.
  3. Padres do have minor league options to move on various replacements (up/down) but Garcia has no options so a DFA (and a FA after the season) but IF they see some chance of a rebound by Garcia he may be the best 2023 choice (that is not a good thing but may just be true)

IF they could swing the IL stint ... along with a rehab ... might be the best option to get a few weeks to see if they can straighten him out on a rehab. If not his end may come with the returns off the current IL of Suarez, Knehr, Wacha, Carlton ... and the near term performance of Jacob, Morejon, and Weathers.

After the trade deadline IF the Padres are out of it ... probably gets DFA just to allow some of the arms that may be around in 2024 to get ML time. If the Padres add a RP at the deadline he might be DFA to make room.

A lot of options but the clock is ticking.

Man our BP sucks.  I said it before the year began and he keeps proving it, Tim Hill needs to go.

Soto is such an overwhelming disappointment. Unclutch and costs us runs in the field. And this bullpen is nothing short of dumbfounding.  3 straight innings of runs. Hill with an epic collapse. Just stunning with how many ways they find to lose.

I missed the first game, but looking at the recap reminds me of something I brought up earlier this year. I don't understand this attitude of we're going to save our closer for the 9th regardless of the situation. You lose the game in the 8th with Tim Hill pitching to Harper and Schwarber with the best lefty reliever in the game in the bullpen.

Taking a step back and looking at the overall performance of the Padres in the 3 games back against PHIL … and knowing they have to win a lot of games going forward to even think playoffs … am not seeing a team that is poised to do it.

1. After the rest of the All-Star break the relief pitchers (all except Hader) totally imploded … this is a group that was outstanding early in the year so the complete reversal is surprising and concerning given no real replacements in hand.

2. The offense did put up some runs but still not delivering in the clutch to sustain rallies and score when it is close and late. The offense was some HR in a hitter’s ballpark. So stats were improved … but not team winning.

3. Soto got his stats again in non-impact situations and then added some of his worst defense of the season … not a $23MM man or $30MM for next season.

Except for fine performances by Darvish and Snell and a heating up Machado … team looks like they will struggle to hit .500 this season even if they get hot.

Sorry , but the Fat Lady Sang .

Tatis day to day with ankle ... not starting today but could PH if needed

Morejon to IL with knee

Weathers optioned to EP (27th man for double header returned)

Waldron recalled
