Despite what he says it's pretty clear Hader has been prioritizing his next contract over doing what's best for the team all season. He comes across super selfish. Despite his talent I won't be sad to see him go. Melvin sounded like he was sick of his bullshit in his post game interview too.

Maybe another team will not care ... but this narrative has to be hurting his FA market (or at least the salary and length in his deal).

Wonder if the front office (or player's union) are getting in Melvin's way of doing something like suspending him for insubordination ... Melvin really seemed to suggest that this situation was not totally in his control.

maybe a possibility was to send him, get only the 3 freakin outs he says he can, and then send somebody to get the last out, the dumb part about this, is that he shouldn't care about outs, but pitches, what is worse, to get 4 outs in 15 pitches, or 3 outs in 25?

Maybe it less about the number outs or the number of pitches ... maybe not wanting to pitch ... sit ... and return to pitch in another inning ... avoid the heat up / cool down / heat up which he may view as higher risk to his arm (or effectiveness).

I wonder what a starting pitcher would think about that,

Starters probably don’t think much of closers anyway …

Starters are built to go multiple innings and know how to manage the game while closers are more geared to go all out for one inning in a critical spot (at least in this day and age).

Listening to D.Smith discussing Hader with some insight as to why Hader may be take this approach (don’t agree but it is his career). Apparently when he was with MILW he did pitch multi-innings, multi games in a row, and often in “unusual” situations … to the detriment of his “stats” … did it for the team. THEN he went to arbitration with MILW and they used those “stats” against him in setting his salary. So he did it for the team and the team turned on him when pay was in dispute … that leaves a bad attitude in the player and not surprisingly making him me first because can’t trust management.

They did that last season with Burnes as well. Used stats and raked him over the coals in arbitration.

And in Hader's defense, they did use him a like a rented mule. Beat him, and put him away wet.

But this is SD, and we have a much better track record in treating pitchers and in the arb process as well. Not that the arb process has anything to do with Hader, since he will be a FA at seasons end.

Really, we should have had him come in for one batter in the 8th, get the out, and let another RP start the 9th with no one on the bases.

I didn't want to look It up, but yes, I do remember him pitching múltiple innings with the brewers, so sad that teams go to the dark side in Arb negotiations, sometimes it's for like half a million dollars, which in their universe Is next to nothing, I know it's More about setting a precedent up, but still

Lugo had a great farewell performance yesterday … 8.2 innings of 3 hit, shutout ball. His season bested what most predicted and he pitched as a starter all season … much more innings that expected … with a very very good ERA of 3.57. He should get a good deal from some team as a FA.

Did not see the the latter innings yesterday … don’t understand why they let him in for 123 pitches in a 4-0 lead but take him out for Hader (non save) with two outs in the 9th?

Given all the other controversy with Hader / Snell managing their workload … maybe Lugo just wanted go the distance (should help his FA resume) and maybe Melvin was willing to help him while making a bit of a statement to the other pitchers (front office).

Padres final four starts are looking to be Waldron - Avila - Wacha - and finish off next Sunday with a bullpen day.

According to the box score on the padres website, and there were two runners on base when Hader came in, Hader is credited with a save.
