I never thought I would see multiple errors from Kim cost us a game.
I also think I've seen enough of Pauley for the time being. I still think he has a bright future, but he looks overmatched. 2-14 with 7 Ks isn't good enough. Send him back to AA and let him get everyday reps.
Agree on both counts. AA season is in swing so get Pauley down there for regular AB … and maybe some work in the OF. (Not sure who they bring up … but some veteran who is more suited for a bench role … let Wade/Rosario deal with 3B for now).
Kim looked way out of it defensively today … and has struggled offensively in the #5 slot. Not a great start to his FA walk year.
I also wonder if Brito needs some re-work in the minors … appeared in 4 games I think and in 3 was very ineffective. Not sure who is hot in AAA for the pen … maybe Morejon or Jacob.
Pauley should have been starting 3rd baseman from day 1. Not my words but managements: if he makes the OD roster, he's going to play. Otherwise, what's the point, right???
Kim is not a 5 hole hitter. We can see that. At what point does management?
As for Brito, he's a starter.
Actually last season with the NYY:
SP: 52.2 innings … 6.32 ERA / 1.48 WHIP
RP: 37.2 innings … 1.43 ERA / 0.85 WHIP
so, Brito did not look like a ML SP in 2023 but he did seem to fit as a RP. Why the drastic change in form for the Padres? Velocity seems there but command does not.
Four games not looking good … and until he regains his 2023 RP form would shy away from and critical roles. With only 8 RP … can’t keep all out of critical roles without burning out the main RP … so either others (e.g. Kolek, Avila) have to step up or Brito needs some minor league time to work it out but that begs the question as to whether someone in AAA will be more effective now in the ML. At this point just a guess / gamble.
Side: Shildt seems to have growing confidence in Rule 5 pick Kolek … unusual for most Rule 5 picks … and Kolek is looking better than most would expect for a Rule 5.
