Padres Future and importance of Sasaski

International Bonus Money coming from Astros as a result of trade of Oliver Carillo. Carillo has some talent but already 22 years old and played last 2 full years in the DSL.
Money is either targeted to pay for RHP Humberto Sanchez of this years' signings or next year, if they have a shot at Sasaki. Don't be surprised if there may be even a couple of more trades like this one by Preller - especially with the new lowered minor league roster limitations (165 during season, 175 during the winter). By the way, still can put up to 15 players on full season IL, which won't count toward the maximum number; RHP Garrett Hawkins, coming off TJ surgery, is likely one of the 15.

This was 2024 IB money though correct?
Are you sure it can be used for Sasaki?

Until clearly otherwise … have to assume this was for the 2024 signings given the questions around the ability to sign much past DeVries … including Humberto Cruz (who as far as I can tell has yet to be “official”).
Does create the question of being able to trade “future” bonus pool allocations (in this case 2025) .. is that allowed in the CBA? Probably the rules exist but have not seen anything to confirm an answer.
As the Padres reset under the CBT and don’t sign any QO FA … their 2025 bonus pool should also reset to be among the higher allocations … and if they follow the Salas, DeVries approach of all in on the top player they should be in good position from a money standpoint … although might see a lot of more aggressive trades for pool money if the kid is as good (and near term) as we would be led to believe. However, there is a limit (think 60%) to the amount that can be added so Padres should be able to … moneywise … stay in the game.

A Roki Sasaki sighting! He's back pitching for Chiba after being out several weeks with an undisclosed arm injury. Pitched 5 innings giving up 3 hits, one earned run, one walk and 3 K's. Those are typical stat this year for Sasaki but in previous years he's been a lot better with his K's and a little better in giving up less hits and walks.
Still a lot of speculation that he has worked out a deal with Chiba to enable his posting at the end of the season. Many predict that he'll want to join Ohtani and Yamamoto on the Dodgers. Sasaki does, however, respect the career of Darvish and was seen wearing Padres gear that Darvish gave him. Don't know if Darvish and Sasaki are spending any time together as Darvish works out his personal family issue in Japan, but hope that Darvish has enough of a connection to influence Sasaki signing with the Padres on January 15, 2025, when the International signing period begins. You may recall that Preller let Sasaki's name slip when mentioning talent from outside the US - was it a forecast for the future? We can only hope.
