Odor … DFA

Nola and Dixon … optioned to EP

Campusano and Rivas … recalled from EP

Knehr transferred to 60 day IL

Kohlway added to the 40 man and recalled

Campusano activated. Rivas and Kohlwey called up. Odor has been DFAd, Nola and Dixon were optioned and Knehr is going on the 60 day.

I know the season hasn't gone the way any of us would have liked, but I'm happy for Kohlwey. It's nice to see a dude that's been grinding for that long get a shot.

Edit: Fenn beat me to it.

Also saw a note that Wacha has yet to throw on his IL stint. May not start throwing for a bit more. Not a good sign for the SP if he can’t return effectively … or if the Padres were willing to dangle him as a trade chip.

Depending on the seriousness … and considering his history of shoulder soreness … might put a damper on the Padres exercising the Club Option at $32MM/2 years.

Rivas to 1B, Jake to 2B, Kim to SS, Bogaerts to DH?

Really surprised Carpenter is still with the team. Kohwley is a lefty, right?

Not really surprised Carpenter is still around (over Odor) … both were playing poor but Carpenter has a contract for about $5MM in 2024 and Padres have to take a chance that he eventually provides some value OR find a way to include him (and his contract) in a deal with a player some other team really wants (Padres maybe pass on getting a prospect).

If the can avoid that 2024 $5MM … they can use that (Hopefully) to get a better player into the mix.

Although I agree on Kim at SS and Carpenter at 2B … I am not as down on Bogaerts as a fielder.

Looking at his defensive stats he ranks among the 20 qualified SS in the middle of the pack in dWAR and UZR/150. So his range is not elite BUT if you like steady performance he has the fewest errors (3) so far this season. (2 fielding / 1 throwing).

For me he would be wasted at DH … just too good a fielder / athlete. Rotate the INF and put him at 1B might be a better INF alignment.

Now IF the Padres come up with a quality 1B … I go out on a limb and suggest giving Bogaert the Tatis treatment but to LF. Keeping in mind that Merrill is on the come and set to replace Kim in 2025 (unless Kim extended). If Kim is extended, give Merrill the Tatis treatment and put him in CF over Grisham (or RF in Tatis shifted to CF).

Only the Padres could have 5 guys capable of playing Major League Shortstop and their best prospect closest to the Bigs is.....a shortstop.

Kohlwey in the line up today in RF, getting his ML debut. Good for him.

Campusano at C, and Tatis DH tonight.

Well, Suarez is in TOR and although not yet activated could be for today’s game. Has not been effective in his rehabs … but rehab performance is always not a good indicator of readiness. Not sure who would get optioned (and who gets moved off the 40 man since Suarez in on the 60 day … could see Carlton to the 60 day).

Complicating the moves is that Wacha is just starting to throw and not expected back until August … but the Padres will need a SP before then and Weathers was just sent down and can’t be immediately recalled and Morejon is on the IL. Probably the preserves Waldron’s position as the 5th SP putting Jacobs at risk of option (unless the pull the plug on Garcia).

Small moves with numerous ripple effects.
