About time to move into the Padres "2nd Season"

The "Off Season"!

Speculation is that the D Backs may go the rebuilding route due to a couple of their top players hitting free agency and

Goldschmidt on his last season under contract.

If this is the case....should we have any interest in trading for Jake Lamb or Nick Ahmed?

Lamb is a beast against RH pitching with two more seasons of control......so we could still have Myers play 3B against LH starters.

Ahmed is a defensive wiz who suddenly found some power and is also under contract for two more seasons.

Although this would overlap with Tatis's arrival.

Thoughts?

(assuming we are comfortable with Lamb's recovery from his shoulder surgery) ... he would be a good trade target with 2 years control (both under arbitration which should be reasonable). Would pair him with Villanueva (who hits LHP very well). Keep in mind that Lamb is a bad defensive 3B but that may be worth the trade off given the poor offensive production by the Padres.

Do think he would be available ... so down the the question what the Padres would offer and what the Backs would accept (should be prospects / low cost if they are going to rebuild.) Not a big market for 3B like Lamb (who is 28) so somewhat hard to size the correct deal.

Note: I don't want to see Myers back at 3B ... so the second piece of this puzzle needs to be a deal of Myers (unlikely do to the contract) or Renfroe (better option to deal with a likely better return piece due to low contract and power profile). It is getting the better return that leans me to deal Renfroe ... both about the same age / control with overall similar production and the Padres can handle Myers' contract.

======

Ahmed no unless get him for nearly zero (he is low cost as I recall so that is a plus). Tatis is near. Ahmed is elite defense but can't hit and if he gets moved to the bench with the arrival of Tatis he is of no value as a PH and little as a utility man.

He’s basically Freddy Galvis.

Low average and OBP but with better defense.

He did hit 16 HR’s this year which is by far a best.

Maybe he’s improving with the bat?’

I think a Lamb/Villanueva platoon at 3B would be very good offensively for SD. I think defensively they would be fine as well to be honest. I would agree with Fenn, and not look at Green. I think he is a product of the excellent hitting environment in AZ and his bat does not transfer to SD at all. As mentioned by Fenn (and myself in other threads) something has to give between Renfroe, Reyes, and Myers. Way too many similar players/bats for one team to have, especially SD.

Reading MLBTR or CBS, they recommend HOU as a possible landing spot for Goldschmidt. If HOU is really interested in a RH 1B, could SD make something work for Myers? Im not overly concerned with return to be honest, just want the roster space. And IMO, HOU could be a team where Myers could do well since he wouldnt have to be the man, the leader, or anything except just play. His bat would play well there as well.

I still resign Galvis, with the understanding that the SS is his until Tatis arrives and then he goes to utility guy. Switch hitter that can back up 3B, SS, and 2B and probably CF in a pinch for a game or two as well. Plus adds some security in case Tatis falters a bit as well. 3 years / $24M.

Start the year with an OF of Renfroe, Margot/Jank, Reyes. Start Codero in AAA. The INF will be CV/Lamb, Galvis, Urias, Hosmer. And Catcher would be Hedges, Ellis with a little more time in AAA to work on defensive skills to start the season.

Yankees are also a candidate for Goldschmidt/Myers.

I'm thinking Galvis will get a better offer....one that assures him of starting more than just one half of a season.

If the Padres are betting on Tatis / Urias being the middle INF by 2020 and expect them to play virtually every day ... and that is likely .... I can't see them spending any larger dollars or going long term on Galvis (or any other middle INF). More likely the wait the for small SS market to sort out and then just scoop up whoever is remaining as the interim SS until Tatis. Better off taking their budget and work on SP alternatives.

From Galvis' standpoint ... the contract (dollars / length) is important but would be surprised he can land more than one year (small market, competition, not that compelling) and the likelihood of playing every game so he can set up his next FA run. Being a part-time player ... if he does not have to ... just kills his future earnings.

Actually the Ahmed suggestion ... if the D-Backs don't require a significant return ... makes better sense since Ahmed's arb number should be small by comparison ... 2 years control provides some "insurance" on Tatis' development ... and can be non-tendered next winter if desired. We are talking "filler" player.

On trading Myers or Renfroe or Reyes or Cordero ... I would trade any of them with the objective of getting a return that is the best benefit to the team for the next 4 years. Since the current (and projected payroll) is not an apparent limit on the choice ... it really boils down to the piece(s) in return. Plus not a small consideration is who would actually want any of them at a price than better for the Padres?

Although I would be happy to move Myers and his 4 years / $70+MM contract .... given his 2018 ... the Padres would have to eat a big portion of that contract (does not help the budget) and likely would get mid to second tier prospect(s). Don't see how that helps the club ... maybe better served seeing if he can play of full slate in LF in 2019 and actually build some trade value.

Reyes and Cordero just have not done enough in the ML (or minor leagues) to generate much current trade value ...they become "holds" to see if they can build on some ML performance unless they are needed as the "additional" player needed to get a deal based on someone like Yates for a top prospect.

Gets me to Renfroe who is about the same age as Myers and significantly older than Reyes / Cordero ... has the ML time and has shown the power profile but still has that low OBP / weak defense working against him. Being controlled for 4 more years and low cost he likely has the best return potential. Preller should expect calls from Cleveland (low budget needing maybe 3 OF), Philadelphia (who may spend their money on Machado), and Atlanta (if they don't resign Markakis).

Since I don't really see the future with either Renfroe or Myers (wishful thinking on my part) ... I would be OK with dealing BOTH and running 2019 with Cordero - Margot / Jank - Reyes (and maybe sign an emergency back-up option for AAA ... Szczur type) and gamble on the AA development of Reed and Oliveras to back-fill in need by mid-2020.

1. Padres have had for a number of years a poor offensive team ... how to improve?

2. After Tatis / Urias / Mejia arrive (and hopefully produce) there appears to be a shortage of near term offensive reinforcements if you consider that given the current MLBPipeline rankings adjusted for the near term graduation of Tatis / Urias the Padres have their Top 9 as all pitchers. Hitters: Reed would be #10 (jury still out), Naylor #11 (no defensive home), and then drop down to A ball prospects.

Might be time to work on adding some higher profile position players (3B, OF) to balance the roster potential. To that end:

1. With A.Allen doing well in AA and the Fall league and with Hedges likely targeted for at least 120 game behind the plate ... should the Padres dangle Mejia back out on the market (big need for catchers)? He really can't play anywhere else (and does not want to) ... marginal defense (and Padres love defense behind the plate) ... and his swing at everything approach might not be a great fit for the future. Alternatively, move Hedges who with his ML experience and defensive chops may actually get a better return from a contender (e.g. Washington, Houston)

2. With all the coming arms (I know you never have enough pitching) maybe time to offer up some of them for legit hitting prospects to balance the future offense / defense. A team needs both (see NYM with DeGrom, Syndergaard, Wheeler, Matz and still were a losing team).

I have not made my mind up on Hedges yet.

Is he a good enough hitter to be your everyday( as much as there is these days) Catcher?

Add that to not yet seeing what Mejia can become I think we need to hold onto both for 2019.

Hedges may end up as the perfect #2 Catcher....great defense with good power.

"IF" Mejia becomes the "offensive" Catcher many think him to be I'd prefer to run with both.

This team needs offense from wherever it can get it and if we can get it from behind the plate all the better!

I miss Benito Santiago.
