Probably a pretty safe bet that if a Soto trade is made with the Blue Jays Manoah would be part of it … his 2021-22 were outstanding … control at a low cost … rebound gamble … not sure why his command (which was never was great) just totally fell apart.
Now he would be “part” and not likely the lead piece … which is a hurdle since not enthralled by their prospects (except Tiedeman).

Quote from fenn68 on December 3, 2023, 5:31 pmListened to Heyman and he says the Padres are really locking in on King and Thorpe as the key pieces … two SP. So likely that long list is “flexible” after those two. King would give immediate help (but only 2 years control) and Thorpe (Top 100 prospect but in AA) is thought to be impacting the ML at some point in 2024.

Quote from BoosterSD on December 3, 2023, 6:54 pmIF I were Preller, I would send the following text to Cashman. .307/.422/.604/1.026-23 HRs.
And the next text would be, that's Soto's away numbers for 2023.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on December 3, 2023, 8:35 pmThe Mariners effectively sold Kelenic to the Braves by attaching him to Marco Gonzalez and Evan White. Between this deal and the Suarez trade they've cleared a lot of salary. Do they make a push for Soto now?

Better speculation might be Paredes and/or Arozarena from Rays. @jonmorosi mentioned earlier that Tampa Bay and Seattle make a good trading pair. Soto would be big boost but at about $32M (arbitration estimate) hr might be rich for Mariners https://t.co/kLdoPRosdX

The Seattle - TB match seems good … although not sure TB strategy.
SEA has pitching which TB needs … both Arozarena and Paredes fill big needs on a weak offense at only about $13MM combined and with 3 years control. Will not be added without some top pitching going to TB.
TB again clearly is trying to drop payroll with Glasnow and Margot also on the trade market. Glasnow with a salary around $25MM is likely to move leaving a bigger SP hole, so a SEA trade for young low cost SP fits. Good chance we see TB end up under $100MM payroll and playing a lot of low cost young players

Just to keep the Padres in the picture … if the trade with TB only returns Arozarena and not Paredes (who is only about $3MM and not a burden to TB) … might SEA be tempted by Cronenworth (at $7MM still in the level SEA can handle) … drop him at 2B and as previously speculated move Rojas to 3B? Given Cronenworth’s contact … SEA could likely get him for less than Paredes.
Padres would clear $7MM plus a long term commitment and coupled with deals of Soto and Grisham (both seeming very likely to move on), they could have a pool of over $45MM to deploy (plus whatever ML talent they get as returns).
If they get in the returns maybe 2 ML SP (even if #4-5 level) then that $45MM could go a long way for a very good SP at #3 (or better) plus offense / RP upgrades.

Quote from BoosterSD on December 4, 2023, 6:10 amI was thinking this morning, that a package of Soto and Crone could be a good match for SEA. Crone returns to his best position in SEA, well Soto is Soto in LF. Although Kelenic was a potential piece to SD.
Im not sure who TAM has ready to go in CF, but should SD clear Crone and Soto, could we see a simple trade of Grisham and Margot? TAM would save about $5M, and SD would get better offensive production, about the same defense and would be a nice pairing with Marsee.

One report had Seattle willing to go up only $25MM in payroll from the current post trade base … back to 2023 level. So, Soto’s $33MM becomes an issue for both SD and SEA.
As good as Soto is as a hitter … like it or not the $33MM salary keeps most teams aways let alone having to give up players to land him. That is a big reason Arozarena’s name is first and foremost as a target.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 4, 2023, 8:05 amHere's another thought on the Soto to NY thing.
If the Yankees pass and sign Bellinger for example....will they be able to afford Soto next year in free agency?
I know it's the Yankees...but that would be huge contracts on Cole,Judge,Stanton,Bellinger and Soto.
My guess is they "really" want soto...so pasing on him now and signing a high priced outfielder may not be the option everyone thinks it is.
Plus,if they pass and Sotro is traded,or signs next offseason with a team in the AL East it would be a double whammy.
I'm guessing AJ is asking for these 7 players as the top of the ask....but will settle for the ones that matter.
King/Thorpe/Perreia...they can keep Schmidt,Brito,Vasquez.
